Cultural Offers:
The Semper Opera and the Staatsschauspiel theatre are among Germany's finest stages. There are numerous other theatres and cabarets, including the famous Herkuleskeule. Dresden's State Art Collection belong to the world's most important museums. A total of 12 museums offer a variety that is completely unique. These include the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Green Gate, the Copperplate Cabinet, the Porcelain Collection and the Mathematics and Physics Salon. Dresden has a high concentration of cinemas, which include a multiplex movie theatre just 5 minutes away. The open-air movie nights by the Elbe are unforgettable. Enjoy the Elbhang Festival and the City Festival during the summer or the Striezel Market during the winter. The Dresden Music Festivals attract 100,000 music lovers every year, and tickets to the International Dixieland Festival in May are always in demand. A number of alternative city tours offer fresh perspectives.
Sights:
Dresden and part of the Elbe Valley have been part of the World Heritage since 2004. Dresden's historic centre, with the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the palace, the Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House, are all just minutes from the apartment, and in themselves well worth the trip. The inner Neustadt (New Town) on the opposite bank of the Elbe offers wonderfully restored baroque houses with large courtyards. The outer Neustadt features many buildings from the late 19th century. Well known as a trendy area of town, an evening's pub crawl offers something for everyone. On hot days, a visit to Dresden's underworld is very pleasant; the catacombs tell tales of earlier times. Modern architecture that is well worth seeing is also available, such as the Jewish Synagogue, or the VW glass manufactory. In the vicinity, Meissen entices with its porcelain works and Albrecht Castle, as does Moritzburg with its Moated Palace, its zoo, its steamer ride to Pillnitz Castle and its parks.
Sports and fun:
It is possible to walk or jog in the the large garden before breakfast. The Elbe bicycle path is available for long or short tours, and it is possible to return with the S-Bahn overland train. Bicycles can be rented in town. It is possible to swim in a number of lakes and public pools. Inline skaters will enjoy the Elbe bicycle path or the Grand Garden, and from time to time large night time skating events are organized. Saxony's Switzerland features numerous hiking paths, which vary from easy to difficult, and which offer spectacular views. Climbing and mountaineering is available, also with varying levels of difficulty. Canoes and rubber boats are available on the Elbe, should you not prefer one of the steamships of the famous White Fleet. For children, the Grand Garden offers the much-loved park railway, a zoo, and the newly renovated Museum of Hygiene. We'll be happy to inform you of regional attractions.
Ski:
During the winter, it is possible to enjoy all sorts of winter sports in the Erz Mountains, or to go skating at the indoor rink.
Golf:
Dresden has two golf courses: Ullersdorf (18 holes) at the edge of the Dresdener Heath, and The Dresdner Golfclub e.V. in Herzogswalde (9 holes). Both courses are a 20 to 30 minutes drive away.
