Digby County & Bay of Fundy

Welcome to 'the scallop capital of the world' Digby. Digby offers visitors a wide variety of interesting activities, dramatic natural attractions and is close to the best whale watching in North America. Come and experience our dramatic sunrises over the beautiful Annapolis Basin and glorious sunsets over the Bay of Fundy. A stroll along the Admirals Walk on our waterfront will bring you to the Admiral Digby Museum, various shops, cafes, restaurants, and historical sites. Drawn by the rich waters flowing from the Bay of Fundy and the resulting abundance of phytoplankton and fish in the area, the whales come to feed and court. The waters at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy from the ledges off Brier Island right up the Digby Neck are important feeding areas for many species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), seals and a wide variety of seabirds. Most common species seen are the Minke, humpback and fin whales, harbour porpoise and Atlantic white-sided dolphins.

The highest tides on earth!

Something truly amazing is happening in the Bay of Fundy. Here the tides are so extraordinary, they have earned the reputation as a world-renowned natural phenomenon. The highest tides on earth fill the Bay with over one hundred billion tons of seawater. Waters as high as a four-storey building brimming with diverse marine life. Only hours later, you can walk on the seabed at low tide. What makes this ecological wonder so unique is that it happens twice a day, everyday. The Tidal Bay Eco-zone includes the fringe of shoreline surrounding Cobequid Bay and the south edge of the Minas Basin. The highest recorded tides in the world have been measured at the entrance to Cobequid Bay. At Burncoat Head, the tidal range has reached 16.5 meters. At Economy Point, a range of 16.4 meters has been recorded. The in-rushing tide creates tidal bores as it floods up the rivers which drain into the Bay. One of the most popular sites for viewing a tidal bore is on the Salmon River near Truro.

Nova Scotia's ideal climate

Nova Scotia has an ideal mild climate. Summer temperatures range from daytime highs of 20-25°C (68-77°F) to evening lows of 10-14°C (50-57°F). Invigorating sea breezes near the coast are often best enjoyed with a sweater on or near at hand. Inland the air may be warmer by 5°C (10°F), and lakes, rivers, woods and farms are pleasantly warm. Temperatures in spring and autumn: average a pleasant 10° cooler. Atlantic and Fundy waters are relatively cold (8-12 C), and they help to keep the air temperature over south-western Nova Scotia on the cool side in spring and summer. In January, when their temperature is between 0 and 4 C, these same waters moderate the harshness of winter. Farther offshore to the east, southeast, and south are comparatively warm 16 C waters of the Gulf Stream. It is warmth, especially from August through October, is credited with prolonging fall - the season many Nova Scotians consider to be the best of the year.

Other Activities canoeing, cayak, mountainbiking
