Burgau holiday villa: Quinta da Fortaleza

If you want a delightful holiday in a secluded village close to the sea, try this villa. Whilst only a short distance from Lagos, (a large fishing port with many facilities and previously the capital of the region), it offers beautiful views in all directions and all the facilities you would expect from a villa that is used by the owners for their holidays as well.

In excellent condition it is easily reached from Burgau along the coast road (the last 2 kilometres are somewhat bumpy one has to add) or directly from the main road connecting with Faro airport (about 1 1/2 hrs away). The roof terrace permits total privacy, whilst the plunge pool is on the sunny south side when you feel the need for a gentle dip.

The villa is clean, well maintained with all the faciliites you need for an enjoyable time. It is well furnished. The one let-down was that there was no wood provided for the fireplace, although the electric heaters in each room ensured warmth whenever additional heating was needed.

Looking out over the Atlantic one can quickly walk down to a sandy beach where the sea beckons. There is a Roman fort nearbye also overlooking the sea and is well worth the minute minute walk to see. To the west, are more beautiful beaches and quiet country valleys, as well as the ancient forts around Cape St Vincent.

The beach café in Burgau was especially enjoyable for meals and so easily accessible. In almost any direction one can easily find other enjoyable restaurants.

The boat trip from Lagos to see the coastal coves and caves was magnificent and unforgettable. Try the local fish restaurant just behind the fisherman's harbour as well. Ask the boat guide where it is - or look in a local guidebook. Fantastic value and atmosphere with wooden benches under a tin roof - and used not only by tourists, but locals as well! You can look at the fish in the chiller cabinet and select which one you want.

Shopping can be done at any of the supermarkets to the nort, east or west of the villa. But a car is needed as the nearest is 4 km away.

We stayed there in late Spring 2009 and so much enjoyed the peace and quiet in the countryside around.
