Photos and Description of this Northumberland holiday cottage Warm and comfortable four bedroom cottage in beautiful, lonely valley

The Longknowe is a comfortable, renovated, stone cottage in a magnificent Northumbrian setting. It sits on its own in an isolated valley. It makes a wonderful self catering holiday for summer or winter. It works well as a peaceful retreat for a couple or small family (with a substantial reduction in rental, except in high season) or it can accommodate several generations or 2 families. At all times you have sole occupancy of the site. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with power showers, an AGA, two small sitting rooms, a large farmhouse kitchen and open fires. You can rent 2 or 4 bedrooms. It also has a modern shepherd's wagon with 2 bunks for summer use. Maximum numbers are 10 in summer. It is 7 miles to the nearest shop, 15 miles to the open, sandy beaches of North Northumberland. The Farne Islands are close by. On a clear night the stars shine brilliantly. You can cycle or walk into the hills from the front door. We are happy to accept one dog by prior agreement only

The Longknowe is a warm and comfortable renovated stone cottage sitting in the Northumberland National Park in one of the last great wilderness areas of England. It is close to a number of trails, including the Pennine Way and St Cuthberts Way. 3 major iron age hill forts are nearby. The valley itself is home to curlew, red kites, swallows, otters, badgers, hares and deer. It is about 15 miles from the coast with Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles within easy reach. It is around 40 minutes from Alnwick Garden and Castle. Hadrians Wall is about 50 miles away and Edinburgh can be reached in under two hours. The nearest country towns are Wooler and Coldstream, both have good shops with local produce. In the immediate area there is gliding at Milfield and horse riding for all levels. There is a steam railway nearby and a working mill. But most of all Longknowe is a place to enjoy open space and tranquillity, whatever the season.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Northumberland, United Kingdom

The house sits on its own, you do not share the site with anyone else while you are there. The nearest neighbours are about a third of a mile away. The house can be rented in three different ways. You can take all four bedrooms, sleeping up to 8 maximum, and pay the quoted price on the rental rates. You can rent 'half the house', all the public rooms (kitchen and two sitting rooms) plus the queen sized bedroom and the bunk beds, for a substantial reduction at all times, except in high season. No-one else will share the site with you. Lastly in summer, mid May onwards, you can also rent for an extra £50 per week the Shepherd's Wagon. This is in the back field. It has two bunks, electricity and is double glazed, but it doesn't have running water, so it is like comfortable camping, and ideal for teenagers. There is also a renovated barn on site, which is not available for use.

Beautiful house in an even more beautiful location

bettybird London
Review Submitted: May 20, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We stayed at the Longknowe for a family reunion of eight adults aged between 20 and 64 and we were all completely delighted by it. It is an old Northumbrian farmstead that has been tastefully converted and restored (without ever being twee) to provide the perfect country getaway. The accommodation is spacious, the kitchen enormous and with two sitting rooms it easily absorbs a large group and the layout makes it ideal for two families.

Although the location is remote, you are surrounded by a working farm and in Spring it was an absolute delight to watch the lambs in the fields and even have a display of "One Man and his Dog(s)" whilst drinking our early morning cup of coffee on the terrace at 7.30. (Yes, it was warm enough for that in May!)

Highly recommended for anyone wanting an escape to the country, and even if the weather is bad it would be no hardship to spend a day in the cottage reading or playing board games. But best of all is the wonderful countryside and walking on your doorstep.

THE LONGKNOWE

Review Submitted: November 16, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Spent 2 weeks in Autumn 2008 at this lovely property and would recommend to those who require almost complete tranquillity bar the farm animals and wild life which are an assett, if you don't mind having to travel 6 miles to get provisions or eat out then the Longknowe can provide the ideal place to chill out, walk and enjoy unspoilt countryside
