A perfect week in the mountains: with the in-laws!

5bellies london
Review Submitted: November 5, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We spent a wonderful half term week in this house - my wife and I, 4 kids and my wife's parents.....not a trip for the faint hearted I'm sure you'll agree. The benefit of the accommodation here, other than the fact that it is very comfortable and nicely appointed, is that there is plenty of elbow room. The separate appartment was a perfect safety valve for when Grandma/Grandad had enough of the persistent demands of a 3 year old Empress, trying to keep up with her tweenage and teenage brothers.

These last two spent hours by the river, scrambling over rocks, "accidentally" falling in (ankle deep!!), attempting to fish for minnows, and always within easy hailing distance of the generous sun-deck. Nearby attractions are a selection of beautiful walks along the Castellane valley both uphill towards Mosset (a charming medieval village wedged prettily on a sheer mountainside) and downhill towards the Moltig les Bains via the ruined fort (about 1 hour circuit).

Further afield the drive up Mt Canigou (with some nice walking possibilities to the summit for the more energetic) and back via La Bastide and the Route des Cols was enlivening and spectacular ....make sure you stop at the Relais de Serrabone for some delicious pate and artisan lemonade.

Prades is a lovely town and worth visiting: mad on market day (Tuesday); quiet on other days when the consumers have all left.

For foodies "El Taller" in Taurinya offers spectacular locally inspired modern cuisine at very reasonable prices (3 courses: 70 euro for 2 including wine) and futher justified the wisdom of holidaying with G'ma and G'dad.

Surprising discovery of the week was Le Royal cafe/restaurant in Moltig. We had already benefited from their friendly service in terms of sourcing bread (on a Sunday!!)....home cooked, warm and every bit as delicious as from the boulangerie. We had also pit stopped there for drinks on the way back home from the ruined fort. Best of all was lunch (discovered on the last day unfortunately) which was a veritable pantheon of delicacies chosen by the chef. You will have to take my wife's word for it as she and her Mum discovered this on a girl's lunch and it was too late for anyone else to sample the delights as it closed that day for 5 months (out of season) - however, I have absolutely no reason to doubt her.

Go to Collioure, drive up to Andorra, see if you can find the little portion of Spain that is marooned in France - book it now! We will be going back.

Mary & Peter's impressions

Adidem London
Review Submitted: June 21, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We have just spent 5 days in the house in mid June. It was clean, comfortable, homely and very well equipped.

At night we were lulled to sleep by the sound of the stream and the song of a nightingale. The little village often seems deserted, except when the baker's van arrives in the tiny squeare at 7.45, welcomed by the local ladies with their shopping bags. We particularly enjoyed the ample deck at the back of the house and its elevated position almost level with the treetops. The countryside was full of running water - in addition to the stream there are irrigation channels everywhere. In June it was also full of wildflowers and butterflies. We had good weather - but for us it was a bit too hot for long walks. But we found (thanks to a leaflet in the house) a lovely one-hour walk from Moltig along the course of an irrigation channel which may date back to the Moors. Further afield Prades is an attractive provincial town with a market and the Casals festival, and the typical Catalan church boasts an exuberant carved baroque altarpiece (the biggest baroque one in France!). Swimming in the pretty bay at Collieure and picnicking in the nature reserve on the headland was gorgeous.

A meal at La Castellane in Mosset was a real treat with very good food and spectacular views down the valley.

We found the locals friendly and helpful. Our overall impression was one of calm and relaxation.

Great autumn break in the mountains...

Francophile99 Richmond, Surrey
Review Submitted: May 19, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
My wife and I, and two friends spent a long weekend (Fri-Mon) in late October in this delightful house right in the centre of Campome. Well equipped and spotlessly clean we had the upstairs 3-bed house together with sun terrace
- for alfresco meals - overlooking the woods and stream.

The village is quiet, but we had the good fortune to be there for their village social (held in a purpose built village hall) and were welcomed by the locals who were thrilled that we joined in with our poor French and poorer dancing. This included food (moules frites) and plenty of wine...and all for 10 Euros. One has the impression that this is a real community with everyone participating and welcoming.

Campone is a great centre for "gentle mountain walks" - we are not into heavy hiking which is plentiful for those so inclined (GR10 is nearby) - and we were able to do lovely four-hour circuits.
The scenery is interesting with Mount Canigou often visible to the east and the whole permeated by the smells of wild herbs.

The town of Prades (markets, coffee-stops, banks, etc)
is just a few kilometers away and is lively enough and the
"little yellow train" (one for next time) starts its journey deep into the Pyrenees from nearby Villefranche.

West of Campome lies the ancient mountain village of Mosset which hosts an annual opera in the grounds of the castle (to coincide with the Pablo Casals music festival in Prades). Sadly we had to make do with the DVD - available from the boulangerie - but have it pencilled in for next time. Also in Mosset we found a perfect pub/restaurant - great food, moderately priced and a welcoming patron.

Back to the airport at Carcassonne via the high mountain pass over the Col de Jau and down through the Gorge de St Georges - beautiful autumn colours all the way - what a finish!!
Chris...
