A Perfect Week!

Scag East Sussex, UK
Review Submitted: March 30, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
What a place! And correctly recommended even for those who don't ski! Our March visit proved to us how beautiful Verchaix could be all-seasons-round. We experienced hot sunshine over glimmering snow, and where the 'white' had evaporated, the colourful spring countryside was shown in all its Alpine glory. I was perhaps more in awe of this than the rest of the family, as "I don't ski". I simply love to absorb the atmosphere and the changes that a holiday brings and this was the perfect chalet and location to please us all!
It was also the first time on skis for the children, aged 8 & 9, who took part in ski lessons at Morillon, a 10-minute drive from the local school. I joined their lessons for the first couple of days - 1 hour a time. The instructors were excellent. My husband had skiied 20 years ago and was soon back on the red slopes - inspired by an expert, the owner of Chalet Chocolat.
It is true that to take a young family skiing for the first time is a huge challenge, but we mastered it, and the rewards far outweighed anything I had expected. Whatever ski ability, the host family recommended exactly the activity to suit. On our chosen 'rest days' it was invaluable to take excursions - again well guided by the hosts - for example to Flaine (famous for its slopes), or Chamonix (a beautiful Alpine town of typical shops, the best ice cream and an open square). We found eating out relatively expensive, so some good packed lunches provided were a welcome choice.
On return to Chalet Chocolat after days out, we were catered for superbly, with dishes including local tastes, and vegetarian, accompanied by wines - again often recommended.
Becky & John are always willing to share their knowledge of everything that can help guests enjoy themselves to the full, and I have not come across better customer service. They are well versed in all aspects of children's upbringing and have pride in Romany's (their daughter's) teenage GBR ski-team ability.
Chalet Chocolat has clearly been crafted to the highest standard, offering comfort in simplicity - of wood and stone, with fur blankets and fresh, inviting bedding to add luxury. Coloured lights in the bath delighted the children. And I basked in the balcony jacuzzi, overlooking the stunning mountain scape.
Thank you, Becky & John, for a perfect week!
Owner's Response: It is such a pleasure to read these reviews and see our guests so delighted with not only their accommodation but with their entire holiday experience. This is what we aim to offer ALL our guests.. happy memories to take home with them; isn't that what the 'perfect holiday' is all about? John and Becky

Giffre Valley 5-Star Chalet

TimmyP Brighton, UK
Review Submitted: February 2, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
Becky and John's Chalet Chocolat nestled on the slopes of the Giffre Valley is just phenominal. The Purealpine website leaves you guessing what the chalet may look like, but you are certainly not disappointed when you arrive. The accomodation is, as promised by Becky, probably the best in the valley. Bedrooms were luxurious and comfortable, kitchen was a good size and well-equipped, the dining and lounge area was large friendly and warm. The balconies face north across the valley and the views are stunning. The jacuzzi is a must as well following a hard day on the slopes, can sit 7ish but comfortably holds 5.
The ski bus is only about a 3-5 minute walk down the hill, but be aware of the timetable as it isn't as frequent as you'd think. I'm sure if you ask nicely John will drop you at the Morrillion gondola station though.
The service is as often or as little as you'd like from both Becky and John (oh and occasionally their precocious daughter Amber!). They are warm and generous in time, information (and John's brandy) and stories.
All tha facilities that you'd need are within a 10 minute drive, be it a superstore (Champion about 5 minutes drive), a bar (about 3 minute walk), but my advice is to stock yourself up on wine & food and hang out at the Chalet... i would recommend this to my friends, but would prefer if they didn't go, as it truly is a gem and wouldn't want to NOT be able to book it next year due to an increased interest in the property. Hope to see both John and Becky next year.
Ti'm Palmer

We have just returned from Chalet Chocolat ,a truly sublime experience.
Our host Becky and John were thoughtful, accommodating and friendly and at the same time discreet. There if we needed them
otherwise in their own private home.

Our fully catered week turned out to be a triumph of diverse culinary skills. We returned to the chalet each day exhausted from skiing in the perfect snow conditions that always seem exist in the `Grand Massif' , to freshly baked cakes and later whilst we soaked in the sheer luxury of a the private hot tub which overlooked both the valley and the mountains, and as the delicious smells of supper wafted towards us, we experienced a sense of blissful contentment.

The chalet is all that it appears on the website and more. The furnishing are of the highest quality and suggest that John and Becky have an artistic background. They certainly have eye for classy detail and seem to have anticipated everything that we would need for an enjoyable stay from the superbly equipped kitchen to the fabulous faux fur throws on the sofa and beds.
I would recommend this chalet to anyone,,, to those that have it all, I would say that you will not be disappointed with this chalet and to those who would like to try how the other half live .....indulge
Owner's Response: We are totally delighted that all our hard work in the building and setting up of this magnificent chalet has paid off. If we are giving our guests a 'sublime experience and 'a sense of blissful contentment', then we are doing the right thing in every way and that is total job satisfaction!
In this current financial climate with money tight and jobs uncertain, It has never been more important, to know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the holiday you book is going to be everything it is advertised as being!
With these great reviews from every guest so far, we want to ensure this contentment continues.... John and Becky

What a wonderful chalet!

The website for this chalet looks amazing; however the chalet itself is even better! From the bedding, the bathrooms, the fire and the sofa's to the hot-tub: staying here is an experience not to be missed.
The property is well presented, well constructed with an incredible attention to detail, and was very clean. The bedrooms (at least the main three) are large, with good en-suite facilities. The kitchen is everything you need on holiday.
The views are outstanding. The property is well located for skiing, although you do really need a car... being at the chalet in winter without one would limit your appreciation of the area. You are only 5 minutes drive from the main bubble lift onto the slopes, and you can ski down to your car snow permitting.
The area is outstanding for skiers and non-skiers alike. There are bountiful racket walks, and we understand that there were many other activities which we didn't try.
The restaurants in Samoens were good - typical alpine food, but competitively priced.
We will go back...
Owner's Response: We feel happy that we are succeeding in our aim.. which all along was to create as perfect a holiday environment at the chalet as is possible and make people happy.. given that the area in which Chalet Chocolat is situated is such a paradise for everyone (skiers and non-skiers alike) it seems only right.. We want to exceed our guests' expectations every time.
It helps to have such great guests too of course!!

New Year's stay at stunning Chalet Chocolat

We stayed at Chalet Chocolat for a week over New Year 2008-2009. John and Becky have done the most amazing job in creating a warm welcoming environment. It really is an exceptionally beautiful chalet, designed and built by John. Our group consisted of seven adults and two children - and we all felt thoroughly at home and totally relaxed throughout our stay. The chalet is warm, cosy and spacious and has the most stunning views over the valley and the mountains. It is extremely well equipped and very luxurious. The food that John and Becky prepared for us was delicious and very generous - a real treat! Verchaix is a beautiful spot in which to stay and the local ski station, Morrillon, is great for families with kids. We would love to stay there again next winter and highly recommend Chalet Chocolat. John and Becky and their family were so kind and generous and really lovely. We had a car which enabled us to drive down to the car park to get the ski lift to Morrillon's ski slopes. It's probably a good idea to have a car, especially with little ones. The local villages of Morrillon and Samoens are lovely and have some great bars and restaurants. It really is a relaxed, beautiful resort with great skiing - not at all pretentious. Thanks, John and Becky, we wish you continued success and happiness in Verchaix and hope to see you all soon! Joanne
