How to get there
Activities / Attractions :
Our house is located in St. Philip - the largest parish on the island of Barbados, situated on the beautiful SE coast. There are many varied and wonderful attractions and activities on the island of Barbados, many of which can be found in all the best travel guides and on tourist websites. Rather than repeat all of this readily available information, we thought we'd share with you our favourites and recommendations : Bottom Bay - One of the most beautiful beaches in the world right on the doorstep! 5 minutes drive away is the Six Roads Shopping Complex with bank, post office, supermarket, fast-food restaurant and other retail outlets. Other suggestions/recommendations further afield : Cricket - catch a match at the Oval. Golf - many quality courses on the Island. Horse Racing - every other Saturday at the Garrison - you can even catch a local rugby match there in the middle of the course!
Earthworks Pottery and it's associated art gallery is an interesting visit, and also a nice spot for tea or lunch and a Banks beer in its treehouse cafe. There are many great sailing trips departing from Bridgetown, and a trip on the Cool Runnings catamaran (with stops for turtles and snorkelling) is a very enjoyable excursion. Brian Talma's 'Beach Culture - De Action Shop' at Silver Rock (Silver Sands) where you can learn to kite-surf or wind-surf is a great find, where you can participate or just watch 'de Action' with a beer. On the East of the island Bathsheba, Soup Bowl (surfing championships held there) and Cattlewash exemplify the rugged coastal landscape and are breathtaking. Andromeda Gardens is also close by and has many examples of the amazing local flora.
Restaurant Recommendations :
When it comes to dining, you really are spoilt for choice in Barbados. Some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean (and some suggest the world!) are a short drive away. Key : (W) West Coast – 30-45 mins drive – most restaurants overlook the Caribbean Sea. (S) South Coast – 15-30 mins drive – likewise most have a view of the Atlantic/Caribbean. (SE) South East Coast – 5-10 mins drive – Atlantic view (nice breeze!). The Cliff – (W) - £55 per person (2 courses); £65 per person (3 courses) – The most exclusive restaurant on the island (Michael Winner’s favourite) ... however ... Lone Star - (W) - £35 - £55 per person – our favourite restaurant on the island (and the second most exclusive!). L’Azure – (SE) – Quite close as it’s on the SE coast, and we highly recommend the Sunday brunch – a local Church gospel choir provide the background music. Daphne’s (W). Olive’s (W) – Holetown (on the road, not overlooking the Sea).
Aqua (S). Champers (S). Pisces (S) – St. Lawrence Gap – great fish restaurant overlooking the Gap inlet. Josef’s (S) – St. Lawrence Gap. Groot's (W) - great food, inexpensive, great atmosphere - another 'Winner' favourite. Cocomos (W) – Great beach bar and inexpensive restaurant – recommend the ‘Roti’ – convenient for shopping at the Chattel village. Opa! (S) – Greek restaurant. Tropical Winds Hotel (SE) – Unglamorous but friendly small local hotel with restaurant in Long Bay (5 mins drive, 20 mins walk) and can use the pool if you have a drink or eat there. A few blocks back from the Ocean. Not a restaurant per se but do not miss : Oistin’s Fish Fry (S) – Friday (or quieter on Thursday) nights – dozens of Fish Fry stalls/barbecues for cheap (really cheap!) but delicious locally caught barbecued fish and macaroni pie – Clarkson’s stall is our favourite with Big Patrick in charge of the grill! King Fish and Snapper are amazing!
