Photos and Description of this London holiday house A self catering family rental on the River Thames London

A delightful 3/4 bed 4 storey Georgian family home on the river Thames in historic Greenwich. The house has plenty of nautical charm, with panoramic views of the river and the City of London beyond. Built in 1790, the house has many original Georgian features but has been thoughtfully updated to provide a modern kitchen with dining table, a ground floor reception room that opens onto a private walled garden (down a flight of steps), an upstairs sitting room with bow fronted window onto the Thames, three bedrooms (two with river views), 2 bathrooms, and a further garden-level bedroom with its own kitchenette and separate toilet. Though Greenwich has enough attractions to qualify as a holiday destination in its own right, the house provides an ideal self-catering base for a family or adult sharers, with central London just a train, tube or river bus trip away…

The house is on a pretty cobbled street in a safe residential area. Several doors along is the famous Cutty Sark Tavern (see painting above), which provides good food and outside tables at which to sit and look out over the Thames. A short walk along the river is the heart of Greenwich, with its many shops, restaurants, art house cinema, theatre and historic covered market. Also nearby is Greenwich Park, with its marvellous views, children’s playground, cafes, boating lake and tennis courts. Greenwich is also stuffed with world-class museums; the Royal Observatory and Planetarium, National Maritime Museum, Queens House, Ranger's House and the small but delightful Fan Museum, all of which have constantly changing programmes and plenty of activities for children. There is a choice of supermarkets five minutes drive away, with numerous other food shops within easy walking distance.

Notes: Though separated from the house by the pavement and cobbled road, part of the Cutty Sark Tavern's outside seating area is in front of the house. It can get quite lively on a weekend summer evening (i.e the sound of amiable chatter - never music unless during annual Jazz festival), but the friendly landlord ensures it quietens down within half an hour of last orders at 11pm.

Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, Tate Modern, South Bank, London Eye, O2 are all stops on this River Bus. TRAIN The regular train service from Maze Hill (5min walk) to Charing Cross station, next to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, takes less than 20 minutes and leaves you ideally placed to visit the shops, theatres and exhibitions of the West End. A perfect Thames River house

the new englanders Charlotte, VT USA
Review Submitted: June 29, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This was a perfect house for three adult couples: privacy combined with warm and welcoming common areas (kitchen, garden, sitting room). The owners went out of their way to provide very thoughtful information packets, with lots of hints about things to do, how things work in the house, whom to contact for help, etc. We were made to feel more like guests invited for the week rather than paying tenants.
If you are looking for London night life, or evenings at the theatre, the house might seem a bit removed from the center of things (about an hour and a half from central London to Greenwich). But
Greenwich in itself is a destination, and it is an easy strolling town; and the Cutty Sark Tavern next door is a fun last-stop-before-home place to drop into after a day or evening out.
The Thames Clipper service is a great way to get to the Tate(s) and other places along the river. And the DLR service is very good for connecting to the London tube system. We certainly didn't feel the need for a car.
All in all, it was a splendid house for six adults, but it's absolutely kid-friendly too. We feel we can recommend it without hesitation.
Owner's Response: The house is very well suited for public transport and can get you to the London sites very quickly.

The local mainline station is just a five minute walk and the trains whisk you to London Bridge (15 minutes) and Charing Cross, central London (25 minutes). Good for National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square's famous cinemas, Covent Garden, West End Theaters etc.

The local Underground Station at North Greenwich (O2 Music Venue/Cinema, Beckham Football Academy) has trains to Westminster (For the Abbey, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Downing Street etc) in 16 minutes, Bond Street (For Oxford Street, Selfridges etc) in 20 minutes and Baker Street (Madame Tussauds) in 23 minutes.

The River Bus from Greenwich Pier (5 minute walk) is great to access Tower Bridge (22 minutes), The Globe (27 minutes) and The London Eye (41 minutes)

Three bedrooms/two bathrooms make this house particularly suited to sharing by two families. It is comfortable, without being luxurious, and has little flights of whimsy here and there that give it character. The steep (and in some parts, narrow) staircases are not suited to those who may be a little unfirm.
Its location in a quiet street right on the Thames is a major plus as is its easy access to public transport -- particularly the ferry service that makes the city quickly and painlessly available. Proximity to the attractions of Greenwich is another bonus.
We found the owner helpful and it was nice to have some personal contact.

Serenity and exquisite river views is not what we would have expected from London accommodation. This charming old red brick offered both together with ample space and a warm welcome by the owners. We had a wonderful time and this was largely due to staying in this lovely house.
