South Cornwall - reckoned to be Britain's most beautiful and interesting coastline - is a land of steep wooded rocky chines which lead inland from the sea along stream and river valleys. Villages spill down these craggy inlets to the water where there is often to be found an old fishing harbour, always massively defended against the rolling Atlantic winter storms, and in today's more gentle political climate usually home to yachts and fishing boats, rather than the sea-reivers, smugglers and wreckers of yore. Mewing buzzards ride ladders of air above the craggy igneous Cornish landscape, as farmers work their herds in what is the balmiest climate in the British Isles, due to the gentle wash of the Gulf Stream along its shores. The local history is rich: the Spanish Armada may have failed in its mission, but South Cornwall saw the only successful invasion since William the Conqueror when the Spaniards briefly invaded the county. Notes: Parking. When you first arrive. It is possible to drive to the property to drop your cases but the roads are extremely narrow. The Millpool car park. This is the only car park in Looe for visitors. All the other car parks require special permits. To get there cross Looe bridge, follow the road in the direction of Polperro, drive a short distance up the hill and take the second turning on the right. This is a Council run Pay and Display car park that only takes £1 and £2 coins. Make sure you have enough coins to hand since the local shops are not able to supply change. The cost is around £24 for a week.

Local history: The local history is rich: the Spanish Armada may have failed in its mission, but South Cornwall saw the only successful invasion since William the Conqueror when the Spaniards briefly invaded the county. The little-known Stannary Parliament at nearby Liskeard, which gave the tin-miners a large degree of self-rule, last sat in 1572, and the picturesque and haunting ruins of tin-mines still dot the uncompromisingly rugged but utterly beautiful landscape. The 'Cornish Alps' are testimony to the once-great china clay industry, and stories of the sea - lifeboat heroes, sea-going villains and naval battles - dominate this once-remote region. Surfing, crabbing, shark-fishing, lobster-fishing and scuba-diving are now the main activities in waters where revenue-men and smugglers and units of the Royal Navy and Napoleon's fleet once contended with cutlass and cannon.

Other Activities: Shark fishing, seal watching, whale watching and bird watching

Cosy place to spend time in the winter

LoveLooe Wales
Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
Just a brief email having arrived home a short time ago from the Sand
Dunes. We ABSOLUTELY loved the apartment. It really does do what it
says on the tin, cosy, clean, warm, welcoming, charming and on and
on......

We have walked our proverbial feet off what with walking (and getting
lost) in Kilminorth Woods and walking to Polperro but what a fantastic
feeling we had when we returned to the Sand Dunes. It was so welcoming
after battling against the storms all day and we wanted to do no more
than cook up a simple meal and relax (we did manage to call in for a
quick sample of local brew on the back mind you!!!) I'll be very
surprised if you don't hear from us again as it was right up our
street.

Nice appartment, perfect location

Review Submitted: November 9, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
The appartment is ideal for a couple, very comfortable and great location close to sea front, beach, shops and restaurants. The information provided (before our visit) by the owner via the web site was excellent, it included everything that you needed to know and useful guides. We booked late but confirmation was quickly provided and we experienced no problems during our stay. We would recommend the appartment and we felt it was excellent value.

A perfect apartment for a short break...

David.j London
Review Submitted: October 31, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We spent 3 nights in Sand Martin and can't recommend it highly enough. The apartment is excellently located within the town, a stones throw from the beach and the Quay and literally a few seconds walk from the town centre streets. The apartment is exactly as described in the advert and certainly didn't disappoint. Fully stocked, clean, comfortable, warm, quiet and cosy, we couldn't have asked for much more. Although the apartment is small, it offers everything that one could need during a short stay in Looe.

Having read some of the other reviews mentioning the parking situation as an issue, it is clearly documented in the apartment description and Paul (the helpful apartment owner) stressed this further when we booked so it did not come as a surprise. After dropping our luggage off at the apartment and parking up in the car park over in West Looe it took us less than 5 minutes to walk back to the apartment through the town centre giving us a chance to explore.

Looe itself was the perfect getaway. We went in the off season but the town was still busy enough to show its character. Despite our short stay, we managed to pack in plenty of activities in Looe and across Cornwall. If you get the chance, we would both thoroughly recommend a mackerel fishing trip. There are boats along the quay that you can book places on. The trips last roughly 2 hours and were so cheap (£10 each). We caught dozens of fish and got to keep our catch! Be sure to visit Sarah's Pasty Shop for some delicious handmade pasties. We managed to sample a few from our time in Cornwall but these were by far the best! We also managed to comfortably fit a trip to both The Eden Project and Padstow in one day.

All in all, a smashing little apartment.

David and Katy.

Sweet little cottage in great location

Review Submitted: October 12, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We stayed at Sand martin in October and we loved it. The flat is lovely, very homely and nicely decorated. It is literally in the centre of Looe and only around the corner (30sec walk!) From the sea and pier. There are lovely shops in Looe and the coastal walk to the next village ( Polperro) was just beautiful. Lots of little boutiques and great places to eat. Great holiday! Would def go again. Thank you very much to the owner of the cottage, you have done a great job with it and we had an excellent holiday.

Our stay atSand Martin, Looe

Review Submitted: August 30, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We had a great stay at this apartment in Looe. The apartment was small but well equipped with a separate bedroom and then living room / kitchen. Plus there was a great shower! We didn't have any problems with the apartment whatsoever and the location was great. The only slight niggle was having to pay for a week's parking in pound coins and them getting stuck in the meter.

Looe was a good base for our Cornish holiday, there was plenty to do nearby and in Looe itself. There were some lovely places to eat which suited our budget - would especially recommend The Smuggler's Cott for great food. The walk to Polperro is well worth doing as well as a trip to Fowey. A bit further a field we had a lovely day in Padstow (about 1 hour away)
