Holmesfield : Holmesfield

Holmesfield is a Parish based around two centres of population; the village of Holmesfield itself, and the hamlet of Millthorpe. It is made up of a number of farming hamlets situated above the Cordwell Valley. The village is very pleasantly situated in a highly respectable neighbourhood and contains several very genteel habitations. The Parish extends beyond Owler Bar to the West and towards Dronfield to the East.

The centre of the parish is marked by St Swithins parish church, which was built in 1826, which can be seen from almost all of the surrounding areas. Amongst the local amenities are eight pubs, (including The Angel Inn, Horns Inn, Travellers Rest Inn and the George & Dragon) and a number of restaurants; both a football and cricket pitch, a village hall (that can be booked by members of the public) and a host of groups and societies to accommodate many an interest, and the parish’s most recent addition, the Vicarage was added in 1999.

Areas of Interest within walking distance.: Fanshawe Gate Hall in Holmesfield is one of the most popular private gardens in north Derbyshire. It combines traditional cottage garden planting with magnificent topiary and water features.

Holmesfield’s important buildings are Holmesfield Hall, dated 1613, with additions built in the 18th century, and Woodthorpe Hall, a large 17th century, gabled manor house, dated 1636.

Peak District: The property overlooks the Peak National Park - where there is an abundance of things to do. Every activity you can imagine is available in some shape or form. Over 22 million people visit the Peak District every year and when you get here ..you'll know why. If you are a keen walker - a guide can be arranged a very reasonable fee to arrange day walks taking in some of the finest views in Europe! Just let the owners know in advance. If you are interested in off road mountain biking then there are plenty of tracks. Hathersage village (7 miles away) has a great heated outdoor pool that is open from April - end September and is definitely worth a visit. Chatsworth House is 6 miles away and is a must visit!

Other Activities:

Close to Chatsworth House, Hathersage, Bakewell, Haddon Hall and many other historical points of interest.

50th Birthday Bash

Review Submitted: December 1, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
After many hours searching the internet for the right property for my birthday celebrations the Old Robin Hood lived up to all my expectations and the description of the property was very accurate. I had 12 guests over the weekend and family followed on through the week. At no time did we feel short of space, the beds are very comfy and kitchen well equipped. My friends travelled from as far as Cardiff and the north east and we had ample parking for all our cars. We dined out on Friday night at Morans in Dore and we had a great meal. On the Saturday night I hired a chef to cook for us, he came with all crockery, a waiter and a three course dinner which was great. I would recommend trying this for your party. If you are at the property on the run up to Christmas, don't miss the Christmas decorations at Chatsworth we also booked afternoon tea with champagne well your only 50 once! We also did sunday lunch on the peakrail train which was good fun. We had a great time but watch out for the wind on the top of the hill wrap up well it gets chilly up there. Thanks Aoife for all your help you have a great property. Best wishes Heather

Perfect venue for my birthday

Review Submitted: January 30, 2012 Date of Stay: January 2012
We chose the perfect venue for celebrating my 60th birthday. The old robin hood is a fantastic property with amazing views across the moors. All 14 of us had plenty of space. Children especially enjoyed the games room. Kitchen is amply stocked, also large enough to have all the family mucking in with cooking and clearing up. Hot tub is fantastic, although given the time of year it was only used a couple of times. Will definately come back in the future and recommend to friends.

Xmas 2011

Review Submitted: January 14, 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
What a delight to arrive and find Old Robin Hood already tastefully decorated along with a Christmas tree all set for the presents to be placed under. The hot tub is a boon, despite the high and cold winds and the games room became a favourite haunt for the kids. The property was clean, big enough for all of us 7 adults and 5 children) not to feel on top of each other and the view over the moors from the picture window was stunning whatever the weather. Mulled wine, roaring fire, kids in bed...what more can I say.

NYE 2011

Review Submitted: January 13, 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
My friends and I decided to rent Old Robin Hood over new years eve and we had a great time!

The kitchen was well equiped and big enough to cater for everyone, and it was lovely to all be sat around the table together. The lounge was also huge and we had lots of fun playing games and dancing after dinnner. The house was always so cosy and warm (thanks to the underfloor heating!), and we also appriciated the hot tub after the long walks we did in the surrounding area.

Nobody wanted to leave!
Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, it is always great to hear when people have a good time. We try very hard to make sure that this house feels like a home from home if not better! Hope to see you again.

Great Property for a Group Weekend Away

Review Submitted: October 8, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
9 of us rented the Old Robin Hood for a weekend away in Sept '11. Everyone was very impressed with the quality and finish of the property.

The facilities were excellent with a fantastic and well equipped kitchen. The lounge with the dining area at one end was huge and a great place to hang out in front of the fire. Having a new hot tub was a great bonus. The garden has beautiful views overlooking the moorland of the Peaks. The owner met me when I arrived and was really welcoming.

During the weekend we went Clay Pigeon shooting in Glossop and mountain biking close to Ladybower Reservoir. Neither were too far to get to in the car. There is also great walking close by with Froggatt Edge a very short drive. The nearest village has a selection of pubs and is within walking distance of the property.

I'd definitely recommend the property to a group looking for a weekend away.
