Cortijo el Pino is a small 2/ 3 bedroom renovated farmhouse with shared use of pool with English owner. The Cortijo is situated in a beautiful tranquil rural area including mountain views, olive groves and almond terraces. There are 2 bars/restaurants within walking distance of the Cortijo, and the bustling friendly town of Orgiva is 3 km/ 7 mins by car. The Cortijo is ideal for a family as the bathroom is off the main bedroom. Guests have their own 2 patios/seating and dining areas, set amongst gardens of vines and figs within a terrace of almond and olive terraces. The English owner lives in the other half of the small farmhouse with private terrace and is available for advice and queries in bookings e.g Alhambra Palace.

This traditional, stone-built small farmhouse is serene and tranquil with beautiful views. Simple accommodation situated on the outskirts of the tiny village of Las Barreras, 3km from the friendly bustling market town of Orgiva (5000 pop.) with supermarkets, banks/cash machines. Delightful weekly market (thurs), daily Municipal Market, discos, petrol stations, post office, Internet cafes. The La Alpujarra valley is in the southern foothills of the magnificent Sierra Nevada, with Historic Granada with the Alhambra places at 50mins. The mediterranean at 35min. A place to simply relax and enjoy. Nearest airports – Granada 1hr, Malaga 2hrs. Nearest beach – 35min, Salobrena, Motril. Car – Preferable but not essential as good local buses. NOTES –cheaper winter rates for longer rentals. 2 Restaurants/bars in walking distance. Town 7 min drive.

Notes: Outdoor filtered oval pool 6m x 4m, shared with single owner. Sheets and towels provided with fans to keep cool. Electricity, gas and wood stove. Wood included. Portable electric heaters for winter. Kitchen cooker has a small gas oven with grill and a 3 ring gas hob. The Living Area comprises one main kitchen/ dining/ sitting area with wood burning stove. Fine for 4 people in winter and 6 in summer, when most eating etc, is outside. There are various outside areas with benches and a large traditional threshing circle good for sunbathing. Note : only bathroom off main bedroom therefore more suitable for families or close friends. Orgiva has internet cafes.

Granada ski resort - Sierra Nevada is 1 ¼ hrs 70km, so is ideal for combining a weeks skiing with a week at Cortijo El Pino to relax. Golf at 30 km.

Holiday at Cortijo el Pino Sept 09

We spent the second week of September at the Cortijo - the last few days of summer and the first few days of autumn this year (unusually early). We are parents and a teenage son who has just completed Spanish A'level and needed to practise his language.

The journey from Malaga airport was very straightforward and we found it easy to locate the Cortijo although it is on the very outskirts of the village.

The listing description seems very accurate to us. We were enchanted to find that you could pick your own figs for breakfast .. and almonds and grapes, as well as pine nuts. It also has a great many places for sitting and eating outside and you can follow the sun/shade as you wish.

We were thrilled with the wildlife in the garden and spent hours by the threshing circle watching for golden orioles and warblers.

The accommodation is basic but it had all we needed (including a cafeteria and a corkscrew). It was clean and comfortable.

Susanne is utterly delightful and could not have been more helpful or generous. We felt we received genuine care and hospitality from her.

We would happily recommend the property to friends and relatives who enjoy a simple lifestyle but if you are looking for luxury then it is probably not for you.

Touring the valleys we were charmed by the mountain villages and bars and tapas - Suzanne gave us some good tips and we also found the Footprint guide very helpful. The views were unfailingly stunning but you need to be happy doing window-ledge driving. It is possible to manage without a car as the bus services are good, but obviously a car will give more flexibility.

Although some local people looked a bit dour on first impression they were without exception courteous and friendly once we tried out our Spanish. The menus del dia were brilliant and only once did we manage to order something we couldn't eat!

Granada is a true joy and again Susanne showed us how to access the Alhambra without having to negiociate the city. We went on an afternoon ticket and found that the crowds diminished significantly after 6pm - a spectacular experience and each time we thought the gardens could not possibly improve, we turned a corner to find an even better perspective.

A very pleasant holiday in so many ways - we hope to go back.

I've been coming here regularily for 10 years and highly recommend it.This is everything you could want from a rural retreat. Susanne the owner is extremely helpful and friendly, and the situation of the cortijo could not be more convenient - the perfect combination of feeling away from it all and yet being within easy reach of everything you need. Perfect if you dont have a hire car - regular buses to Granada a short walk away, easy walk into town, regular (though not frequent) buses back. Dont miss the track walk into town - 30 mins of adventure whilst still feeling you cant get lost! Orgiva is an extremely easy town if you're English, due to the large foreign poplulation, yet retains its essential Spanish character - cafe con leche and tostadas at Golindo's recommended - as is el Bou cafe in the covered market. Market day brings an entertaining mix of locals fighing for a place at the vegetable stalls and hippies making music and dancing at la Baraka - gorgeous Moroccan restaurant. Or have a quiet lunch at the pizza restaurant with the orange grove garden.
The cortijo accomodation is simple, charming yet perfectly comfortable and provided with everything you need for a self-catering holiday, although you may well be tempted away to Granada for a night or two - a wonderful city, with unending numbers of bars and restaurants, dont miss the Alhambra (of course), have an Arab bath, see genuine flamenco at Upsetter just near the Plaze Nueva - get lost in the Albacin, haggle for Moroccan slippers and try mystery tapas - Granada is famous for its tapas and every beer or wine is accompanied by these free snacks - ranging from a dish of olives to a plate of lamb stew! Clean comfy pension accomodation is available in the centre of town for around 30 euros a night per twin room, try any of the pensions on the road leading from Plaza Nueva up to the Alhambra.
Ideally situated if you want to explore the surrounding countryside and the Apuljarras - if you love walking you're in heaven, but if you just want to slob, you're in heaven too!
I cant think of a nicer place to spend a relaxing week or two than Cortijo el Pino - forget the credit crunch - its a ridiculous bargain! Lay by the small but refreshing pool, sunbath on the threshing circle, let the soft air and peace and quiet revitalise you - a true hidden gem.
