Situated in a peaceful valley at the confluence of two streams, this site would have been sacred to the Romans and is still a very special place today. With the ramparts of the fort guarding the farm yard to the west and the only Roman milestone left standing intact in it’s original position just behind the cottage, few properties in Britain can have so many traces of Rome around them. The cottage at Codley Gate Farm has recently been converted to provide superbly appointed 5 star holiday accommodation. There is a fabulous well-equipped spacious dining kitchen, a cosy sitting room with an inglenook style fireplace and three double bedrooms, each with their own luxury en-suite bathroom. Lovely country walks can be enjoyed directly from the cottage. There is a sheltered graveled yard to sit out in on your return and use of the meadow in front of the cottage. Ideally situated to explore Hadrians Wall Country together with the breath-taking Northumberland countryside and coastline

The cottage is situated in a former farm yard amongst a cluster of old traditional farm buildings and Codley Gate Farmhouse. It is approached via a quiet access lane (the old Stanegate Roman road) and is immediately adjacent to the World Heritage Site of Vindolanda and the Chesterholme Museum. Codley Gate is set partially in the Northumberland National Park and is just under one mile below, what is considered to be, the most dramatic section of Hadrian's Wall. The village of Bardon Mill just over a mile down the valley. The nearest town is Haltwhistle, 4 miles to the west and the award winning market town of Hexham is 14 miles east. The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne with it's lively Quayside and Baltic Art Centre is 35 miles to the east, whilst historic Carlisle 'Gateway to the Lakes' is 24 miles to the west.

The ensuite for the third bedroom can also be accessed from the living area if required and has a spacious corner shower cubicle.   • The main bedroom is on the first floor, this romantic suite has a kingsize bed with leather bedhead and oak bedroom furniture. The room enjoys pleasant views across the stream to the meadow. The second bedroom is also on the first floor and is fitted with ivory painted furniture. It can be set up either as a twin bedded room or as a super-kingsize bed, this room has views across the yard to the fort walls. The third bedroom is on the ground floor, this sweet room has lovely 'tulip' motif curtains, blind and matching window seat. It has oak flooring, a double bed, built in wardrobe and a small chest. (comfortable duvets and cotton bedlinen are provided in all the bedrooms)

Notes: The cottage is fitted to a high standard to provide the best in comfort and luxury and is decorated in subtle Farrow and Ball colours. There are dimmable halogen lights throughout, a built in sound system to the living areas with an iPod docking station. The kitchen is an impressive room with a high beamed ceiling, slate flooring, extensive painted units with granite work-tops and includes an American style fridge-freezer with water and ice dispenser, Rangemaster Cooker and wall mounted LCD television. There is a drying room for wet weather gear, the high out put combi oil fired boiler provides hot water and central heating throughout the cottage. The cozy sitting room has oak flooring, comfortable Tetrad sofas and an inglenook style fireplace inset with a wood burning stove (fuel provided). There is large flat screen free sat, television. Features include a window seat and a handmade steel and oak banister to the staircase. Well behaved dogs accepted by arrangement.

Setting: Codley Gate Cottage was once the main dwelling house on the site but was converted to a milking parlour when our ‘modern’ farmhouse replaced it in the 1800’s. In 2008 the barn was sympathetically restored using the best of modern building methods combined with traditional materials to provide a spacious and comfortable holiday home. The valley is rich in British natural wildlife with red squirrels, deer, badgers and bats regularly seen from the cottage. Swallows, owls and curlews are part of the abundant bird life that surrounds Codley Gate.

Area attractions: The list is endless but a few highlights are Vindolanda and the Chesterholme Museum, The Forts along The Wall including Housesteads & Chesters. Kielder Water and Forest park. Country Houses within a short distance include Wallington Hall and Cragside. Coastal Castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne Holy Island. The Alnwick Water Gardens and Castle.

Whether you wish to visit Roman or other historical sights, enjoy the unspoilt countryside with moorland or woodland walks, visit the Northumbrian Coastline or the Lake District or simply curl up with one of our good books or magazines by the fire, there will always be plenty to do here. The kitchen is well equipped for those you enjoy cooking that special meal, (there are good farm shops, Waitrose and other quality supermarkets to choose from). Alternatively there is a wide choice of places to dine locally. Our family have enjoyed the peaceful tranquillity of Codley Gate for many years and we now look forward to welcoming guests to this special place. What a excellent week we have had. The cottage is outstanding, it is very clean, the beds were comfey and the kitchen large. In fact everything about the cottage is perfect. The wecolme pack of wine,biscutes,tea and fresh eggs was a nice surprise. We made friends with the dogs and chickens, which came to sit with you from time to time.

The location of the cottage is perfect for visiting Vindolanda, it is next door, and for exploring the rest of the Roman forts and Hadrean's Wall.

Neil and Claire were very friendly and helpful and we hope to return in the near future.

We're just back from 3 nights at Codley Gate, and the entire family (including the dog) enjoyed the break. The cottage is wonderfully comfortable and we felt at home right away. The furniture and equipment is all in the "5 star" category - it feels like no expense has been spared and everything has been done very thoughtfully. For example, you rarely get a proper welly dryer in a rental cottage, but it's very handy. If you have very young children, you might want to take some plastic dishes since the stuff here is all Denby - nicer than we have at home!

The children enjoyed playing "pooh sticks" at the stream outside and they thought it was great fun to see chickens running around outside. We appreciated the peaceful setting.

Vindolanda (literally next door) is well worth a visit and the Roman Army Museum is great, too.

Claire and Neil were very pleasant to deal with, helpful but not intrusive. Many thoughtful little touches which add to the enjoyment: fresh flowers, a bottle of wine - even a treat for the dog.

Whilst not the cheapest option, the cottage is excellent value for money because everything is such high standard. We would definitely like to go back. As our 3 year old said, "I want to keep the cottage".

Just returned from a wonderful weekend at this cottage and have to agree with previous reviewer that this property is outstanding! The quality of the build, fixtures, furniture and equipment is extremely high and exceeds expectations throughout. The bedrooms were very comfy and spacious with en suite in all cases and the kitchen and lounge had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The kids loved paddling in the stream, playing with the dogs, cats and chickens and the nearby Roman Fort is a fascinating and engaging way to spend an afternoon. Claire and Neil were very helpful and keen to ensure that we had all we needed. All in all I would recommend this property to anyone. We hope to return for a longer stay in the future.

We all had a super time at Codley Gate. The description was accurate if not a little understated - the cottage was fantastic from being exceptionally clean to being brilliantly furnished. Both Clare and Neil were very helpful with information regarding things to do in the area to providing us with fresh laid eggs and biscuits!! I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family.
