Photos and Description of this Dorset holiday cottage 3 bedrooms, log fire, luxury kitchen, 20 mins from the World Heritage coastline

Historic Grade II Listed (English Heritage) 17th Century detached cottage with a thatched roof and a wealth of period features. The cottage is on Benville Lane, which is the lane that Tess of the D'Urbeville walked along on her journey from Beaminster to Evershot. Benville remains the small unspoilt hamlet that Thomas Hardy described in the 1800's. You will find the pub that Hardy describes (The Acorn) and the cottage where Tess was to have stayed in nearby Evershot.

Benville is a tiny hamlet consisting of a dozen or so houses and cottages. It is an ideal base for touring West Dorset and Thomas Hardy country. 2 miles (3km) to the east lies Evershot with its award winning pub The Acorn and outstanding restaurant The Summer Lodge. In nearby Beaminster you'll find a traditional market town selling excellent local produce along side tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. 10 miles (16km) to the south you will find the Georgian town of Bridport and the fishing port of West Bay. This stretch of Jurassic - World Heritage - coastline boasts the stunning beaches of Burton Bradstock, Lyme Bay and Chesil Beach, as well as the Swannery and tropical gardens at Abbotsbury. The county town of Dorchester is 10 miles to the South East. The area is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders and if full of prehistoric sites, the Dorchester Museum has a good collection of locally found artefacts.

The lounge is full of character with a low ceiling/exposed beams, and a small stone carving of a king in the wall found when renovating the cottage. There is a 3 seater sofabed, small 2 seater sofa plus a leather armchair, with a 32 inch TV and DVD. We bought the cottage for its views across rolling hills and open countryside. The beautiful 3/4 acre garden is filled with a variety of flowers and soft fruit bushes and trees. A haven for for wildlife and butterflies. There is a play house, trampoline with safety net and trees to climb.

Week in September

We stayed at Benville Cottage for a week in September. The cottage was great. Very nice decor and contained everything we needed.
There were plenty of nice pubs to eat at in the area and if you fancy a special treat we'd really recommend the Summer Lodge restaurant. Not cheap but excellent.
There was plenty in the way of walking in the area.

New year at Benville Cottage

Review Submitted: April 22, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
We spent New year 08/09 at the cottage. It provided the perfect base for adventures all over Dorset. The description was spot on, we spent most of our time cooking feasts on the Aga. The property was very clean and tidy. We loved the location which was nicely secluded in beautiful countryside, great pub food 20 minutes walk away at The Fox. Excellent garden for kids. Brilliant! Will return.

2 week summer holiday (3 children aged 4,5 and 7)

Review Submitted: November 3, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
As a family of five, this luxury cottage provided plenty of space for us all to stay comfortably, and was very well appointed including a TV in the master bedroom. When we arrived it was clean and very well-maintained.

Cooking on the Aga was fun, despite being a novice! We were able to buy good quality local produce from nearby Beaminster (4 miles). The children loved playing endless games of hide and seek in an extensive garden which had a wendy house and a trampoline with side netting.

The cottage was a set in peaceful Dorset countryside, accessible to several parts along the coast and Dorchester for provisions. Many days were spent on the nearby beaches, offering their own attractions. In particular we loved the beach at Burton Bradstock, which has a renowned cafe serving excellent crab sandwiches and home baking. The coastal walks were easily managable with the three children aged four to seven.

Lyme Regis was a very attractive town, with beach and some lovely eating spots. Our eldest spent countless hours searching for fossils on the famous Jurassic coast.

Going inland we visited the Motor Museum near Yeovil, and historic Sherbourne's Abbey and Castle.

We would have no hesitation in recommending to any family who love the outdoors, and want to get away from crowds. For a famliy with three young children, we had the perfect holiday - why go abroad!

Summer 2009

Heike+Christoph 54290 Trier, Deutschland
Review Submitted: August 19, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
In June 2009 we have spent two weeks in this original cottage. The Laura Ashley-styled interior, the well appointed kitchen including the Aga cooker and the given harmony on the first floor have inspired us. The large garden with its hedge, bushes and herb beds is very appeasing, we have spent some lovely afternoons in the meadows by having a picnic, playing badminton or simply enjoying relaxing moments.

Geographically, the cottage is located quite well close to the coast and to the cultural historical sites. The scattered villages invite for hiking, offering good restaurants and cosy pubs; the homelike small town Beaminster affords a good opportunity for buying everyday commodities (there is also a bottle bank there).

All together we have had a very nice time and we can recommend this cottage.
