Updown Cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the south-west of England - the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and beyond. Gold Hill is the location for Ridley Scott's most famous advertisement for Hovis Bread featuring the boy on a bicycle and in which Updown Cottage may be seen. Shaftesbury is a centre for superb locally produced food and hosts a Food Festival each May. There are many excellent restaurants within half an hour to plan a gastronomic break. The town now boasts it's own refurbished indoor swimming pool tucked between the old buldings of Bell Street. Steeped in history, the towns of Salisbury and Sherborne offer excellent shopping, eating and nationally renowned music festivals centred around the Cathedral and Abbey. Stonehenge is of course a must! The Jurassic Coast and beaches, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Poole and Bournemouth are all reached well within the hour and further afield Bath, Bristol, Longleat and parts of Devon.

  • Teal is a grown-up hideaway at the top an ancient staircase with views over the rooftops and gardens and beyond to miles of glorious countryside. It has its own ensuite slate lined shower room with loo and basin and is furnished with a hand built oak kingsized bed built into an oak 'deck' on 2 sides. Escape to watch DVDs on the flat panel TV or listen to your own CDs or MP3. Aqua is a favourite - cosily looking over Gold Hill. It is furnished with a kingsized bed and antiques. Toile is furnished with a single painted sleigh bed and its cushioned window seat looks out over Gold Hill. Tulip is a favourite with 'little' girls of all ages. Its single antique sleigh bed is perfectly placed for looking out over miles of countryside and is romantically lit from above by 'tulip' fairy lights wound around the old beam. All linen is crisp White Company Egyptian cotton bed linen and all beds come piled high with pillows & cushions. Each bedroom is equipped with a hairdryer, robes & towels.

Spring Break at Updown Cottage

Four of us stayed at Updown Cottage for a long weekend in March to mark my mother-in-law's 75th birthday. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect 3 days, with dawn to dusk warm spring sun in a quintessential English rural setting. The cottage looks cosy and compact from the exterior but don't be deceived as it is on several levels at the back with ample room for a larger group and everywhere is beautifully furnished and lovingly maintained. I have stayed in many cottages over the years and very few have come close to the impeccable standards of Updown Cottage. Highly recommended for any occasion and, whether it's exploration of beautiful unspoilt countryside or relaxing in the secluded garden with glass in hand, Updown fits the bill.

A great place. Pictures dont do it justice. Old exterior,
and very modern interior while retaining the 16th Century
character. A place with charm, and not many (very steep)\
steps to Town Center. Our little 2.5 year old loved the many stairs and garden. (and piano). We would recommend this UPDOWN house, and our family
will certainly return in the future. Interesting, first class
home.
