An idyllic, romantic and remote self catering holiday house, situated on the side of a heathery hill, perfect for families or romantic couple. Beautifully decorated combining comfortable and contemporary with outstanding sea views. 5 lovely bedrooms all with sea views and 2 bathrooms, large well equiped kitchen and dining area overlooking the sea and a cosy sitting room with open fire, TV, Sky and DVD. A games room with table tennis and outside patio area for al fresco dining. From the house there is easy access to coastal walks for spotting otters, dolphins, porpoises and seals and an easy climb up the hill will reward you with breathtaking scenery, sea eagles and numerous species of birds or just sit and enjoy the beautiful sunsets over the sea. There are many local activities, wildlife and bird watching, hillwalking, climbing, 7 golf courses, fishing, boat trips, pony trekking, historic castles and standing stones, beaches and caves. On the North West of Arran on a heathery hill looking across the sea to Kintyre. Between the coastal villages of Pirnmill and Machrie which have a restaurant and tea room, golf course, tennis court, beaches, caves and bronze age stone circles. North is enchanting Lochranza with its ancient Castle, whisky distillery and scenic harbour where you can see seals,and otters. Deer also graze along the shore and on the popular golf course. The Waverly, the last paddle steamer on The Clyde makes its regular summertime visits to the quay. From here you can also do a bit of Island hopping on the Cloanaig Ferry across to Kintyre, Gigha , Islay and Jura. For keen walkers and climbers there are beautiful gentle coastal walks to catch glimpses of porpoises, miinke whales, dolphins, basking sharks, otters and birds; and for the more energetic hillwalker there are dramatic routes through valleys, past waterfalls, up hills and to lochs all with stunning views, birds and wildlife.

The Perfect Family Holiday Location

My own and two other families of 4 had a fantastic week at Banlicken in July. It is, indeed, on a remote part of the island (with very limited grocery stores outside of Brodick 30 mins away) but with a garden the children loved exploring, a perfect games room/den, a beach just down a (step slippery) track and beautiful views it is the perfect base. The house and cottage are well laid out with plenty of space, comfort and facilities. The track up to the cottage is slightly longer than we had anticipated and after heavy rain a torrent across the track meant we left the cars and walked up - but it isnt far. The house and cottage have one bathroom each, which should have been enough except for the fact that we struggled to use the bath-tap showers so everyone was luxuriating in long, deep baths.
The owners were extremely helpful before and during our stay, as was everyone on the island! How refreshing!!
Arran is a big playground. On dry days there were endless walks, beaches to explore (and light fires on), pony trekking, speed boat riding, biking.....and I recommend a trip to Holy Island and a walk over the top - kids loved it.
Be warned - the nearest restaurant - the Lighthouse is BYO - they don't sell alcohol and they don't take credit cards (but there is a cash point nearby). I believe the nearest pub is 6 miles away - but once you're ensconsed in Banlicken for the evening with all your supplies you actually don't need to go anywhere.
For anyone in a group of 12 or less, Banlicken is ideal.
I hope we can return one day.
