Agde is an ancient fishing port on the River Herault.The old town with its quaint alleyways has many good restaurants under the shade of the beautiful Platane trees.It was founded by the Greeks and is known as the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean because of the volcanic rock on which it stands.The cathedral and many other buildings were built from this rock. The Canal du Midi is here and it is possible to take trips to the Etang du Thau a tranquil salt-water lagoon-home of pink flamingoes and oyster beds and the towns of Sete and Meze with their seafood restaurants and pretty canals. Sailing & water sports may be enjoyed at Cap d, Agde where there is huge marina full of luxury yachts. There are also golf courses here and for children Aqualand. The cities of Bezies, Montpellier and Narbonne are reached easily by road or train, or visit Pezenas for its fine architecture and alleyways full of artisans Each day sees a colourful local market nearby.
