Photos and Description of this Coux et Bigaroque holiday cottage 2-bedroom cottage for 4; 1-bedroom cottage for 2; luxury bathrooms & kitchens

Furnished with antiques and large, comfortable beds, these traditional Perigordian farm buildings have been converted to high standard self-catering cottages that retain many original features. Located at the end of a lane on the edge of a small hamlet and looking out over a wooded valley, the detached cottages are set in peaceful surroundings without being isolated. And, with efficient heating, both are perfect for a relaxing or romantic countryside holiday all year round. Five minutes by car to a beach on the river Dordogne, le Cluzel offers easy access to many chateaux, vineyards, gardens and prehistoric cave dwellings. The Périgord is renowned for wonderful foods such as truffles, walnuts, duck, strawberries, foie gras... A stroll through the markets in the local towns and villages will tempt you with the abundance of fresh fruit and produce. And if you're planning to attend a wedding or other event at the nearby Chateau de Cazenac, le Cluzel is the perfect place to stay.

Details for la Grange 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 2 Bathrooms

Built about two hundred years ago as a barn and cowshed for le Cluzel, la Grange is now a comfortable holiday home for up to four people. Downstairs the original crèche where the cattle used to feed now forms an interesting feature that separates the kitchen from the sitting/dining room. The stairs lead from the corner of the sitting area to the landing with doors to the two en-suite bedrooms off it. The cottage has its own paved and gravelled terrace with dining table and chairs for al fresco drinks and meals. Beyond this is the 'potager' (vegetable garden) laid out formally with fishpond in the centre. There's plenty of parking space at the entrance to the property and two hectares of grounds in which guests are welcome to walk or watch birds and other wildlife.

Le Cluzel is convenient for lots of the major tourist attractions in the Perigord, including pretty towns like Montpazier, Domme and Sarlat. Visit the chateaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, les Milandes (the home of the entertainer, Josephine Baker) and Hautefort. Admire the elegant gardens of le Manoir d'Eyrignac, wander along above the Dordogne in the gardens of Marqueyssac, or explore the many caves that abound in this area: Proumeyssac, Font de Gaume and, of course, the famous Lascaux II. There's a beach at Coux et Bigaroque, where you can swim in safety on hot days - there's a lifeguard on duty in the summer and often even an old-fashioned icecream van selling ices and cool drinks! You can go shopping, visit the cinema (often you'll find films in the original English-speaking version), eat out in the interesting old towns of Bergerac and Perigueux, or relax and take the train to Bordeaux. We're also very conveniently located for the Chateau de Cazenac.

An idyllic retreat that you will want to return to

Pod65 Wellesbourne, Warks
Review Submitted: March 22, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
As we drove into Le Cluzel and first saw the views we really felt that our holiday had started - and it just kept getting better! This cottage is a real gem of a find. It is set right in the centre of the Perigord Noir region with easy day trips out in all directions to some of the most beautiful scenery, spectacular castles, and fascinating walled town markets imaginable, however you could be forgiven for actually just sitting on the verandah all week with a book, gazing at the views and letting the stresses of life run away.

The cottage itself has been converted from the cowshed and it still maintains all of its rustic charm whilst being superbly finished with every modern convenience and comfort that you could want, - all furnished with a classic elegance and an eye for detail whch shows that Philip was in the antiques trade. The whole place is immaculate and anything that you could imagine needing is supplied for you.

Philip and Margaret are excellent hosts, friendly but unassuming with a font of knowledge about the local tourist attractions, the best local markets and restaurants to go to, and an ability to interpret the slightly odd opening hours of the patisserie and cave (wineshop) in the nearest village!

All in all, this is not the place for you if you want bright lights and lively entertainments, but if you are looking for a relaxing getaway from it all holiday and you appreciate beautiful scenery, good food, good company and elegant surroundings, then look no further. Once you have been to Le Cluzel then nowhere else will ever quite match up - we have already booked our visit for next year.

A True Oasis

The first thing that strikes you when you arrive at Le Cluzel is the spectacular view across the valley from the terrace. Breathtaking is the only word for it and Le Cluzel just gets better from there.

The cottage itself is beautifully appointed, stylish with some gorgeous period items and attention to detail is very much the byword. There is always something you forget when self catering but don't worry because your hosts have already thought about it. It really is a home away from home.

Philip & Margaret are wonderful hosts, friendly, knowledgable & generous to a fault, the feast they prepared for us on the second evening of our visit was something else.

If you are looking for tranquillity, culture and beautiful surroundings then Le Cluzel is for you.

The only downside is having to leave.

Thank goodness we always go back.
