Photos and Description of this Lucca holiday villa Family home in secluded garden, with olympic-length pool

The villa, built in the 1870’s, sits on top of a hill overlooking green fields and vineyards towards the south and west. On a property of about five acres, the garden offers complete privacy, and a variety of walks and quiet places. Only ten minutes from the centre of Lucca, the surroundings are open farmland, with a church on a higher hill and farms and villas to dot the landscape. The area offers the best of what Tuscany is known and loved for: an unforgettable countryside, a beautiful medieval town full of art and precious boutiques, Summer festivals with opera and concerts, wines to forget oneself in, and of course renowned and unknown restaurants that will give great pleasure to those who appreciate the simple flavors of Tuscan cuisine.

Unforgettable

Franck and Stacy Orinda, CA, USA
Review Submitted: July 26, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
My girlfriend and I stayed at Bell’ Estate with family and friends for five unforgettable days. My only complaint is that I wish I could have stayed longer.

The house is simply stunning. The spacious living room, beautiful dining area, and homey kitchen provide plenty of space for a family to truly relax and enjoy their vacation. The bedrooms are comfortable, the 3+ bathrooms are nice, and the property, with its magnificent views, is nothing short of spectacular.

The villa is large, elegant, and extremely well maintained, yet still feels like a rustic country cabin – which is exactly what I was hoping for. The garden offers a pastoral peace and quiet that seems right out of a Wordsworth poem. Some of the moments I most cherished during our stay (and our entire European vacation for that matter) involved sitting in the garden during the quiet, early morning hours, sipping the fresh espresso I’d just made in the kitchen, and reading a good book. Eventually, I’d make my way down to the pool to bask in the sun, soak in the serene Tuscany scenery, and swim laps in the pool. That’s what vacation is all about for me.

If you can convince yourself to leave the property (which I admit was difficult at times), the guestbook that Alessandra provides has detailed to directions to several great restaurants and hiking trails in the area. The nearby town of Lucca is genuinely charming, and Florence is less than an hour’s drive away.

Alessandra, the owner of the villa, was so helpful – making sure everything was ok and answering any questions we had. The housekeeper was friendly and accommodating, even helping us with our laundry.

The house also provides wireless internet access if that’s important to you.

Yeah, so, in case you can’t tell yet, I had an unforgettable time at the Bell’ Estate. I would love to go back and stay for even longer. I did not want to leave.

Great mix of town and country

Verdigris Manchester, UK
Review Submitted: October 5, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Our very mixed group (at least in age - a 3 year old, 7 year old, two parents in their 30s and two grannies) had a fabulous stay at the Bell' Estate in August '09.

The house has an air of slightly faded grandeur about it, which makes it feel special without being in any way intimidating or starchy. Ultimately you are holidaying here and you don't want to feel as though you can't sit on the sofa! Happily the house is very welcoming and you soon feel right at home. There is so much character and interest too that you can easily spend a week exploring the contents, frescoes and artworks.

The kids loved the grounds, picking ripe tomatoes and plums, and generally charging about as though they owned the place, while the foot thick walls keep the temperature just right inside for the adults.

The swimming pool is absolutely wonderful. Not just hugely long, but deep and crystal clear too - dive down when the sun is shining brightly and and it is like being in an underwater cathedral! Our only one disappoinment was that we could not get the pool lights working for evening swimming, which would have been magical.

The house is a 10 minute drive from the centre of Lucca - a town we had never visited despite coming to Tuscany many times, but now firmly one of our favourites. Not too touristy, great little restaurants and cafes, beautiful buildings and cycling on top of the city walls is a joy, shaded throughout the day and certainly the coolest way to spend a couple of mid-August afternoons.

Our thanks to Alessandra, who went out of her way to ensure we had a comfortable stay - even helping direct us to the only bar/supermarket in Tuscany open on the public holiday we arrived on - and especially for packaging and sending on all the clothes we left behind!

If you are after a bright, modern archetypal holiday villa then this probably isn't for you. But if you 're looking for a house with character, history and charm then I can't recommend Bell' Estate highly enough.

Owner's Response: It was great having this family at the house. About the pool lights: we are plagued by the vulnerability that all our equipment has to electrical storms, but those lights will be fixed by next Summer. It makes me really happy to see that these guests were able to connect to the house in a personal way- that is the way it should be lived.

Paradiso

larondine New York, NY
Review Submitted: July 19, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
This villa is happily situated in the hills north of Lucca; there are spectacular views to the south of the city, from every vantage, and the house is oriented in such a way to inspire true enjoyment of classic, Tuscan landscape. The very private house and grounds are beautifully preserved and maintained. The interior of the villa is filled with beautiful books, furniture, and objects of curiosity and historical interest. Because the ceilings are high, and the walls very thick, the villa stays cool even in intense summer heat if one follows the detailed and knowledgeable instructions provided by the owners. The kitchen is a marvel, and is ideal for anyone who might enjoy finding the readily available and exceptional local produce, and creating meals which may be taken al fresco. Everything was beautifully arranged in expectation of our arrival: there was mosquito netting for each of the beds in each of the bedrooms, there were fresh towels, and additional towels for use at the pool; the beds were extremely comfortable. There were two, well-appointed showers, as well as a large, separate bath. The housekeepers were very helpful in showing us around the house, and were very accommodating, although it helps to have some Italian in order to ask questions, should you have any. This is a villa that clearly belongs to a family who take great care in preparations for guests, and rightly expect that the guests will treat their environment similarly.
The gardens are filled with lemon, and other fruit trees, and the huge and magnificent pool is suitable for real lap-swimming. The pool also enjoys beautiful views of the hills south of Lucca. There are hoopoes, and even a songbird that sings the first few bars of the Eroica at sunset. There are bats considerate enough to deplete the mosquito population at dusk over the pool—definitely a spectator sport. The guest book is filled with useful suggestions from restaurants, to wine tasting, to shopping. We adhered to these suggestions, and this greatly added to our enjoyment of Lucca and the surrounding area. In addition, it was most helpful to be given informed advice about supermarkets, one of which in particular, had spectacular local produce. Guests will find that it helps to follow the advice about restaurants as well—you cannot go wrong, or be disappointed! We have rented villas elsewhere, and found Bell'Estate to be an absolute paradise—really second to none. We hope to return next year!

A Unique Experience

Maggie Spain dublin, ireland
Review Submitted: March 26, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
We had a wonderful time here. It was really an experience. We enjoyed the house very much and the wonderful views from the bedrooms. It is a very personal house as it has been in the same lovely family for a long time.
Lucca is a great location and there is plenty to do. We particularly enjoyed hiring bikes and riding around the town. We were looked after very well when we arrived. The kitchen has everything and the local supermarkets and food shops are great to visit and make cooking a pleasure.
It would suit a large family. The gardens and the pool area are lovely. I think that this house offers a vey special Italian experience

An Idyllic Stay

the doge Burlington, VT USA
Review Submitted: March 23, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
I passed a magical fortnight at Bell'Estate, with a large party of family and friends, in the early summer of 2007, Not that we seemed like a "large party" in those broad halls and spacious, high-ceilinged rooms, deliciously cool even in the warm Tuscan afternoon. All of us--and we were a diverse lot, from octognarians to teenagers--were struck by the combination of stateliness and ease, beauty--at every turn, inside and out--and the gracious, unhurried rhythm of life that our surroundings embodied and invited us to share.
I realize I'm concentrating more on "atmospherics" than concrete details, but the property details supplied in the description, and the photos, are accurate and reliable (though the photos, lovely as they are, don't do justice to the variety of aesthetic pleasures the villa affords). My stay at Bell'Estate--the quiet light of the early morning, the welcoming coolness of the rooms at noon, the warm gatherings on the terrace or in the great room for dinner in the evenings--was both memorable and ineffable. It is an enchanting place.
