The drive to Jardim is via the motorway to Ribiera Brava then road via new tunnels past a number of small seaside towns and finally a 2 km run down to the sea. The area is much favored by discerning walkers; many stay in nearby Prazeres (10 minutes drive) with its levada and good road access to the walking centre of Rabacal . There are challenging walks up from Jardim and its neighbor Paul do Mar to Prazeres. There is a sandy beach, restaurants, marina ATM and supermarket 10 minutes drive away in Calheta The Jardim shop sells the essentials - eg bread, water, beer. Jardim is known in Madeira for its unspoiled beauty; it is a historic agricultural village where the houses are reached on foot via the lovely square and pretty pathways. There is no road access to the villa; cars are kept in car park 5-10 minutes walk away. The beach next to the villa is pebble and difficult to swim from but it is a lovely promenade walk to the jetty which is a popular swimming spot next to a pretty bar.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Calheta, Portugal

Jardim do Mar : The village is small and compact - only a few hundred metres from one end to the other - and it highest point is about 50 metres above sea level. The road to the village leads to the car park and there is a road running down one side of the village to the jetty. There is a smart restaurant on this road..The centre of the village is a pretty square with fountains , a small hotel and a beautiful church. Most villagers reach their homes on foot by the cobbled alleys spreading from the square. These alleys are interspersed by small plots for growing bananas and vegetables and many houses have pretty gardens with bouganvilleas and hibiscusus. The villa sits at the edge of the village with stunning views of the sea and huge cliffs, facing west towards the sunsets over the ocean. The path down from the villa leads down to a pebbled beach on the one side and the beginning of the lovely promenade along the sea and around the village to the jetty on the other.

A beautiful villa with outstanding views

Frequent travellers 3 Worcestershire
Review Submitted: April 30, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
The villa is lovely, very tasteful and well equipped. It is nice and private and has the most wonderful views from all aspects of this well designed modern property. We ate in more than usual as the facilities and weather were great and the tourist season really just beginning, but Joe's Bar, which is a short couple of mins walk up from the villa serves excellent reasonably priced food and the staff (particularly Lino who speaks very good English) are very welcoming and friendly. The journey back from the bar is mostly downhill but can be pretty hazadous after a few beers!

The main thing guests need to fully appreciate is the long and uneven path from where you have to park your car through the village to get to the villa. Taking cases to and from was a challenge and you need to consider your supermarket purchases to ensure they are manageable.

We thoroughly enjoyed Madeira with it's lush dramatic scenery and the villa proved a fabulous & peaceful get away which is just what we wanted, even our 11yr old son ranked it as one of his best holidays ever and I would recommend it to couples and families with older children as long as all guests are mobile and fairly fit!

Many thanks Liz & David for a lovely hassel free booking & a wonderful stay.
Owner's Response: Thank for your kind comments. We are delighted that you appreciated the villa so much and enjoyed the beautiful views – and benefited from the convenience of Joes Bar!

We agree that the walk can be a challenge when fully laden (5 minutes when unladen!) and always highlight this point and will offer help with suitcases

Review Submitted: August 30, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
The Villa is very nice and practical, and perfect for quiet and peaceful vacation. The pool is large and deep enough. There is some salt in the water, so better not use your best swimming suit.
We hate all kind of bugs, and there were hardly any (only some small, timid lizards). It is good to have binoculars with you (we saw dolphins). In a few days you get used to the stairs leading to the villa, but a trolley is an excellent help to take shoppings from the car park to the villa. We loved Tar Mar restaurant, good food and excellent service. We also ate a few good dinners in the village hotel. We have to say, that we ate dinner once in Joe's bar, and the food was horrible! Lunch (salad and sandwich) was ok. Also the hotel Calheta Beach in Calheta village was serving excellent food (especially the beef on a hot stone). The hotel Jardim Atlantico in Prazeres had sky high prices for dinner. All and all, the place is great( two adults+two teenagers).
Owner's Response: We are glad that you thought the villa was very nice and the place was great.Thank you for your comments. For interest salt water pools are commonplace; they have chlorine generators and the chlorine produced is the same as used in other pools. We find them pleasant and refreshing (the salt content is a fraction of ocean sea water).

Review 3 bedroom villa with pool, August 2009

Oosterbekers Netherlands
Review Submitted: August 26, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We stayed in the villa for 2,5 weeks in August 2009. The house is in perfect order, modern, clean, and very comfortable. It also has a very friendly and helpful caretaker. The small paths through the village are part of the charming character of the village, and so are the steps to the house. For us (family of four) no problem at all. The area is very quiet, the lovely sounds of the ocean are allways there in the background, and the views are extraordinary. We enjoyed our time in the villa very much, with long evenings outside. Regarding eating out in the village: the dinner at the hotel was perfect, the first and second visits to Joe's bar were nice too, the third time was very poor service (must have been a bad day for the waiter). There are many interesting things to see at the island, which can easily keep you busy for three weeks. We will certainly consider going back.
Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed the villa and village so much and hope that you do decide to return.

Perfect villa for a relaxing break

Algarvian Hereford, UK
Review Submitted: July 9, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
A well equipped villa in a spectacular location. The property is perfect for a relaxing break in a beautiful little village in western Madeira.

The walk to and from the village car park did not cause us any issues, but getting the cases to and from the villa is a challenge, however we were assisted by the chap who looks after the villa. We particularly liked the open plan downstairs areas of the villa which open up onto the pool and bbq area. The villa has everything that we needed for a relaxing stay

The village has a well stocked local store, which we made us of a few times for emergency provisions and the local bread man calls at the village square each morning who provided us with fresh bread and cakes.

The villa is within walking distance of a couple of great bars, we particularly enjoyed the meals at Joes bar in the village. The village restaurant, Tar Mar offers great seafood and is again only a few minutes walk from the villa.

Not related to the villa, but a word of warning.. We did have a meal at the hotel in the village square, which was of poor quality and we further discouraged from returning when the waiter tried to overcharge us by 30 euros! One minor point during a fab break.

We would wholeheartedly recommend this villa, Jardim Do Mar and Joes bar and would like to thank David & Liz and their local representatives who made the whole experience perfect. We would very much like to return in the future.

Thanks
Chris
Owner's Response: We are delighted that you liked the villa and village so much
