Mallorca:
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and along with its sister islands of Menorca and Ibiza, lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 - 2 1/2 hours and on arrival local time is 1 hour ahead of the time in the UK.
The first recognisable landmark on the final approach before landing will be the magnificent 14th Century Gothic cathedral at nearby Palma, and the sight of it from the air never ceases to take your breath away. Son Sant Joan, which is the main tourist airport, is a large modern facility, and is located in the south of the island just outside the capital Palma.
Majorca may not be the first place you think of to see fine examples of classic British sports cars. However, from time to time during the summer months The Classic Car Club of Port d'Andratx meet and show off their proud possessions to the crowds of admiring onlookers.
Puerto Andratx area:
Since the onset of mass tourism in the 1960's, Mallorca has without doubt, been one of the most popular holiday destinations for all nationalities, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. As a generalisation, the resorts on the islands south coast are the more lively and perhaps more suited for groups of young singles or those seeking an active nightlife, but Andratx is the exception, offering a quiet environment while being only half an hour away from the thriving capital Palma or 15 minutes away from the night life of Magaluf.
The south west of Mallorca has no fewer than 6 championship standard golf courses including the impressive Golf de Andratx course which, despite its name, is actually closer to Camp de Mar than it is to Andratx. A local organisation based in nearby Magaluf called 'Mallorca Golf Connection', are the official TUI Thomson golf booking agency, can organise tee-off times, transport to and from the courses and discounted green fees.
Getting there:
If you can reach an airport in your home country you can reach Mallorca. I think every budget and charter airline flies into Palma, Mallorca. If you prefer to drive you can even catch a ferry via Barcelona. Of the budget airlines we recommend Easyjet over Ryan Air, it just seems to work more efficiently, but so far we have tried many different carriers and experienced minimal problems. Before flying to Palma I suggest you book a car. Again there are many options here but we tend to use 'Record' for two reasons, one they seem ridiculously cheap, and two you can do all the paperwork while waiting for the bags to arrive as their office can be accessed from the baggage hall as well as the arrivals hall. For a very few Euros per day insurance can be extended to cover wheels and tyres, a good idea given the narrow streets and high pavements on the island.
