4 Great weeks in Antigua.

I stayed in one of the two Mango Villas for four weeks and I am delighted that I did so. They are sited in the best and most attractive part of the island, in a quite road, very close to one of the most beautiful beaches and a few good bars and restaurants. There is a handy supermarket at Jolly Harbour, about a mile away, and where you can also find a cyber café that exchanges SH books, a pharmacist, and smart shops and bars if that’s your kind of thing. The garden is pretty, peaceful and with some shady palm trees.
It was really a bungalow with two good sized double en-suite bedrooms, a large comfortable and airy sitting room, and very well equipped kitchen. It was fully air conditioned and with a ceiling fan in the sitting room. There are 3 doors to the gardens and entrance and all the windows have fly screens. (I hardly ever saw a fly though, or a mosquito!) The decorations and comfortable furniture are of a high standard and tasteful, while the bed linen is high quality cotton and the towels soft, white and fluffy. Garden furniture is supplied for al fresco dining, as well as sun loungers.
One of the best features is a decent sized ‘plunge’ pool that is shared between the two villas. I used it twice a day and it was clean, big enough for me to get some exercise and it had easy access by tiled steps at the shallow end. It’s also useful if the sea is a bit too rough for swimming.
The English owners have not had these villas long and there were a few teething troubles with the water supply and other minor faults during my stay, but all these were soon fixed. I was impressed by the helpfulness of the owners and by John the local manager (who you can ring on the house phone if you have a problem).
I would suggest that you hired a car (I used St Johns Car Hire and can recommend them) from the desk at the airport. It is quite possible to use the frequent busses instead of course. It might mean a walk to the bus-stop and waiting in the sun, but if you are young and fit I see no problem. Do remember that the roads are often rough and bumpy, with deep pot-holes and vicious speed bumps! A good idea is to follow another car and take note when it swerves to the opposite side of the road for apparently no reason. I drove a small automatic air-con car and it was fine, but some people recommend a 4x4.
Highly recommended!
Peter.
