A wonderful place to stay

I was looking for a place to holiday with my family, including my two-year-old twins and their grandad who has been very ill. La Fenice was fantastic. Myself and my husband slept in the master bedroom with the twins. Two of the bedrooms had a mezzanine area so that up to four people could sleep in each room, and the owners had thoughtfully provided a travel cot. My father, who had been unwell, had a double bedroom to himself for peace and quiet, and my brother and sister shared the third bedroom, with my sister installed in the upper level and my brother below. The views were beautiful, the gardens were safe for children to explore and play in, and the swimming pool, though not open in early May when we went, looked wonderful, and was reassuringly fenced off to prevent accidents with small children. There are three toilets - great for a big family - and two showers. The whole place was classic, elegant and tastefully furnished, while having the mod cons of TV, DVD, CD player, washing machine and dishwasher. There were children's toys already there, to which we added from the handy shops in the village nearby. We shopped cheaply in the supermarket and the weekly market and cooked at home most nights. You needed a car to get to shops and sights nearby, but the walks in the local area were lovely and a new stunning view of the beautiful farm land hit you at every turn. The medieval town of Cortona, 20 mins drive away on a hill, was one of the most beautiful and intriguing towns I have ever visited, and felt far less touristy then many places in the area. Trains took you to Florence or Rome from a station 10 minutes drive away, and we also drove to Sienna in a day. We ate outside every day, and lived the dream of a Tuscan life. Our Italian friend, who came with us for the first night from Rome, thought it was perfect and said it made him homesick for his own village. The pace of life is just right for all three generations, and Cortona had cafes, bars, restaurants, museums, churches, and sights aplenty, as well as a lovely hillside park with a playpark for kids and a bench for grandad! We would love to go back, it has won our hearts.
