Plenty of garden furniture for dining alfresco and sunbathing. 5 bedrooms; 3 double, 2 twins, plus cot and travel cot. Bathroom and toilets on ground floor, large shower room and toilet on first floor, 3 WC in total. Large lounge leading onto south facing terrace with panoramic views. Open plan kitchen and dining area. Fully equipped kitchen & separate utility room. Open fire. Internal and external BBQ. Fully equipped for families, very child friendly including toddlers and babies. Large games room: table tennis, air hockey, table football, darts, toys and books. Children's tree house. 11 bikes: 4 adults, 2 with child seats, 7 children's. Near A10, 75 minutes 2 airports. Close to many beaches. 1 mile boulangerie, 3 miles Cozes town. Close to Royan, La Palmyre Zoo, 3 golf courses within half an hour. Sorry no smoking or pets.

Fantastic zoo at La Palmyre, near Royan, children can feed the animals. Picturesque village of Talmont is two miles away. Golf courses at Royan, Cognac and Saintes. Tasting available at many vineyards in Cognac region, approx 40 minutes. Aquapark at Jonzac with slides and lots of water fun. Aquarium at La Rochelle. Supermarkets at Cozes and Meschers. Weekly market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) in Cozes in the ancient Halles. Daily market at Meschers. Arces sur Gironde is a small hamlet with a restaurant and boulangerie. Many restaurants within 20 minutes drive, specialising in the local seafood in particular oysters and mussels.

We stayed at Fontdouce (2 families, sharing) for 2 weeks, and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. The house was comfortable & clean, with a well-equipped games room and was an ideal base for exploring the Royan area. Evenings were spent BBQ-ing & relaxing on the terrace - we loved the secluded valley in which the house is located - and the fields of sunflowers were a joy to wake up to each morning. We used the bikes to cycle into the village each day for bread & croissants, along quiet country lanes. There are a number of good beaches nearby, and we tried most of them - particular favourites were La Cote Sauvage for the body-boarding/surf, and St George for a more gentle swim. The zoo at Palmyre is worth a visit, and the golf at Royan is good, though a bit expensive unless you do twilight. There is a good water-park at Jonzac, which the kids loved - we spent a long day there. Talmont is a car-free village on a rocky peninsular - once a week the streets were lit with candles into the evening and we enjoyed a couple of meals there, and a stroll around the "boutiques". I would recommend hiring a boat to see the estuary, but you will need a licensed "skipper" - easily available from Royan. Recommended.

Beautiful rural location with excellent facilities

This is a really well provided house set in a perfect rural location. The owner provides several bikes, which are a really good way to see the country (the local boulangerie is just a 10 minute ride away). There are good restaurants along the estuary (10 minutes drive), The house is surrounded by trees and there is a nice big terrace. If peace and quiet is what you are after, you won't find anything much better than this.

Our 2009 Summer Holiday at Fontdouce

We stayed at Fontdouce for a fortnight this August with our three children aged 7, 6 and 1. We were delighted to find that the villa is just as secluded and beautiful as it was described, and many aspects far exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed fantastic weather and visited the local beaches many times, which we found perfectly clean and great for swimming. We also visited the local zoo at La Palmyre, which was outstanding and offered the children a rare chance to touch and feed many animals including giraffes and zebras. The villa itself was clean when we arrived and is exceptionally well equipped, in fact we struggled to find anything missing at all during our stay...right down to a great paddling pool for the terrace and nets for catching butterflies in the meadow. There were plenty of bikes to use on the quiet local roads and the games room was a definite hit for the whole family. The accommodation was spacious and we loved the fact that the children had the freedom to explore the wooded area, treehouse and meadow surrounding the villa. The local town (Cozes) has a great weekly market and lovely outdoor heated swimming pool plus we found some great restaurants locally. All in all we had a fantastic holiday, with a rare chance to relax somewhere which suited every member of our family...we will undoubtedly return to Fontdouce.
