Spacious 4 bedroom family owned villa in Praia da Luz. Stunning sea views in quiet location. Large sun terrace overlooking private south facing mature garden. Short stroll to beach. Wide range of facilities in walking distance. Owners live locally giving excellent support to guests. This is a child-friendly family villa with spacious guest rooms with twin or double beds. 3 have access to the south facing sun patio and garden with orange tree, palms and mature bougainvillea. Meals are taken on the large sun terrace with amazing views over the sea. If the heat should be too much, shade is provided under the bougainvillea that grows rampant over walls. In winter a log fire adds comfort. Local amenities include a wide range of restaurants, beach bars, shops, golf and tennis. Fresh bread rolls can be bought daily from the bakery, 100m down the road. The internet cafe is a similar distance from the villa. Approx 1 hour drive from Faro airport with good flights from all major airports.

Casa Girassol is very close to all amenities - walking distance. Local buses stop at the top of the road and travel to the main town of Lagos and other nearby beaches such as Burgau. Fares are very reasonable. The villa is in the lovely seaside village of Praia da Luz, 5km west of the old, charming port of Lagos. Local hotels offer facilities such as tennis courts and swimming pools, on a daily basis for a small fee. The coastal train ride takes you into the historical port of Portimao where there are museums and other attractions. Lagos bus station is the starting point for picturesque journeys into the mountains to Silves and Monchique. For longer trips, local coaches go to Lisbon and Saville and there is also a high-speed train to Lisbon.

Notes: Built in the 1970s the villa was designed with space and an awareness of what it is like to live in a hot climate. Overhanging roofs, plants and shutters keep the rooms very cool in summer. The wood - burning fire and electric heaters and the south facing aspect provide warmth in winter. Very small children will need to be supervised on the staircases but the walled garden makes it very safe and private for families. The views over the sea and the mature gardens directly behind the villa provide a wide variety of interest from passing shipping to exotic birds and colourful flora. Dining area with access to the kitchen. Small washroom next to kitchen. Staircase from terrace down into garden. Easy access from car port to front door in large porch with climbing plants. Garden gate to private paths down to beach. Towels and linen provided (not beach towels). Maid service once per week. Full clean once per week at end of rental. Starter packs of food/ firewood by arrangement.

Tennis and Horse Riding: Tennis is a popular sport all year round with some excellent courts within walking distance. Social tennis can be enjoyed regularly in the local clubs at Lagos and Burgau. Horse riding is a growing interest in the area with some excellent facilities for all ages and stages located within 10 mins drive from the villa. There are many walking groups operating all year round. This is a favourite occupation during the cooler months of winter where walkers can enjoy the beauty of the many coastal paths and the amazing scenery of the local mountains.

Golf: Local golf courses include Parque de Floresta 15 mins. Boa Vista 5 mins. Palmares 20 mins. Pennina 25 mins. The most recently completed course is only 5 mins drive from Casa Girassol, at Boa Vista. Parque da Floresta is well known for its challenging, hilly course, just west of Luz. Palmares and Pennina have both hosted international golfing events and are just east of Lagos.

The beach: The villa is in the lovely seaside village of Praia da Luz, 5km west of the old, charming port of Lagos. The beach is very safe for swimming and would suit all ages. It is a 5 min stroll down to the beach - and a 6 min stroll back up the slight hill. In summer there are plenty of beach activities organised for families, while in winter the beach is quiet and unspoilt.

I went to Luz in May with a 5 other friends. The villa was spacious enough to occupy everybody and still allow for personal space. The villa was clean, tidy and well maintained with a lovely view from the terrace and ample facilities.

We also hired a car meaning we able to travel and experience the great beaches in the area and the gorgeous Portuguese fishing villages. I would highly recommend a trip to Burgau where both of these can be experienced.

All in all a very good place to spend whatever kind of holiday you are after!
Owner's Response: Although Casa Girassol makes an ideal villa for a family holiday, it is also extremely comfortable for groups of younger people. There are ample facilities for an enjoyable holiday with the beach, restaurants and bars located within walking distance. Hiring a car adds another dimension to your stay with so many lovely places to visit from quaint fishing villages, to the medieval town of Lagos and the wild and wonderful beaches of the West coast.

A week in October

I stayed in Casa Girasol with six other friends the last week in October 2009. The villa is perfect for a large group of friends or family.We were met by Mona who showed us everything and was on hand throughout the week if we needed her.
There are four bathrooms and toilets so no queueing at all, loads of hot water for showers and washing. The bedrooms are spacious and most importantly the beds are comfortable! There is a lovely laid back children friendly feel to the villa. Sue's granchildren's toys and some 'things' are around the house, games and jigsaws, a few clothes, it feels like the family have just gone out for a while. The kitchen is well equipped, the outside space is beautiful with a large terraced garden going down to the back gate.
From there it is only a five minute walk to a large sandy beach. Just outside the front of the house is the main street into Luz. We ate twice at OndaLuz, restaurant, and found the food to be good quality and reasonably priced. The bakery just along from there sells lovely bread and cakes, try the pastel de natas, gorgeous.
We hired cars from the airport and the journey over was very straight forward, well signposted and Sue's instructions were very helpful and got us straight to the door.
The weather was fantastic, sunny and hot all week. We visited Lagos, Albufeira and Silves which was beautiful. Another must is to travel up the west coast to Carrapateira and watch the massive Atlantic breakers rolling in. Lots of surfers up there doing scary things in the huge waves.
If you're looking for an ultra modern white and chrome villa then this is probably not for you but if you like a comfortable fiendly 'lived in' villa then look no further.

We stayed at Casa Girassol in August 2009. we found the property to be exactly as described. The Villa is spacious, cool inside with fantastic views.
The property was well maintained.
The beach is literally 5 minutes walk away and although the property does not have a pool the garden and terrace are lovely to sit on!

I love this spacious villa with all the comforts of home. The garden is a wonderful place to catch the sun or just relax and the sun terrace offers a wonderful view for every meal time and evening relaxation. The beach is a short stroll away as are some of .the many restaurants.

My friends and I have visited twice and hope to come again. The villa and the location are perfect for our girls retreat.
Owner's Response: Rose and her friends are regular guests. They love the weather in June as it is not too hot for them and they can enjoy all the Luz has to offer. Each year they leave me a small gift as a thank you....if you rent Casa Girassol for a holiday you will see these gifts displayed around the villa. This year I was given the baby lizard that is running up the wall by the main stairs!

great family location for a break to the sun.

This is a great house, and we as a family have stayed there on three occasions, Spacious, airy with lovely garden and sea views. Just a short 10 minute stroll to the beach from the back gate which is a lovely way to start the day. Great bakery round the corner for fresh bread each day for breakfast!! Lovely peaceful resort and would strongly recommend this house to anyone looking for a family sun holiday, We hope to return again soon.
