What to do in surrounding area:
For lovers of art, culture and history Uzes is centrally placed for visits to Nimes, Arles, Orange and Avignon whilst for lovers of wine and gastronomy there is no need to even leave the town. Uzes sits amongst vineyards and boasts a wealth of restaurants, patisseries, foodie shops (One devoted solely to truffles and truffle produce), wine and oyster bars and of course the famous markets (produce only on Wed and a fabulously colourful general market on Saturdays). A bric a brac market is held in the streets on Sunday mornings.
The magnificent scenery of the Cevennes is a short drive away whilst the strange and beautiful landscape of the Carmargue with its bulls, wild horses and flamingos is only an hour’s drive. Bulls are very much part of the local culture and you will find bull meat on menus and in late July/early August you can witness the Fete Votive in which bulls run through the town streets chased by young men trying to pull their tails to turn them round.
Uzes, a historic market town:
Uzes is a charming historic market town on the Languedoc/Provence border. It is about 20 miles from Nimes and 25 miles from Avignon. It is less than an hour from the coast and backs onto the hills of the Cevennes. The famous Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard is 10 miles away.
The town itself has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture as is one of the “most beautiful towns in France” and has a perfectly preserved medieval centre. There are dozens of shops and restaurants within a few minutes walk from the apartment and the twice weekly market held in the Place aux Herbes is one of the best in the South of France with fabulous local produce. The town boasts an Arts Quarter with numerous galleries and craft shops. The town is surrounded by stunning scenery and is ideally placed for walking, horse-riding, canoeing. There is a golf course nearby and a branch of the French national stud where you can view displays of horsemanship.
