New Year 2008/09

Date of Stay: December 2008
My husband and I with our son and nephew (aged 10 & 11) stayed in this apartment and my parents stayed in the Penthouse in the same block, both are owned by Keith and Louise. My parents arrived on an earlier flight than ours. Keith and Louise arranged the return transfers, parents were collected from the airport and taken into Sofia city for lunch whilst they waited for us to arrive, all went without a hitch (though there were plenty of taxi drivers waiting at the airport anyway offering transport to Bansko).
We arrived at the apartments to a very welcome, roaring log fire in each apartment, plus welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, bread, butter, jam.
Both apartments were as described and spotlessly clean. The views of the mountains from the balconies were great.
Transfers to the main gondola were available from a shuttle bus linked to Hotel Olymp literally just around the corner - cost us 6 leva per person per return journey (around £3) but sometimes they didn't charge or just charged 1 way! I understand Keith was in negotiations with the hotel for them to provide complimentary transfers for Keiths clients so this may have changed by now.
The food in the local mehana's is excellent and, by comparison to UK prices, cheap. The boys loved the huge flaming chicken skewers in Dumanova Mehana at the top of the old town, worth a visit! Chicken/pork karvarma is another local speciality, like a casserole and very tasty. If you're looking for burger, pizza or other British favourites you generally won't find this in Bansko (hooray!) - we did see pizza in one of the mountain restaurants but at £6 a slice it's wasnt cheap!
The New Year celebrations were fantastic, fireworks and live music in the town square to see the New Year in. New Years day is also celebrated, with a carnival and traditional entertainment in the square where my parents saw a donkey in a trilby hat!
Our only small moan regards the queue for the main gondola, up to 45 minutes wait some mornings though we were there during a week of national holiday when many Bulgarians head to the mountains from Sofia etc! If you get to the gondola before 9am the queue isn't so bad (it opens at 8.30am) That said, many other European ski resorts also have long queues in the mornings.
Keith and Louise couldn't have been more helpful and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. Bansko is worth a visit and we would recommend both properties.
