Golf:
Andalucía is an ideal destination for a golfing holiday and there are several golf courses to choose from in the Granada area. Even in the winter, the days are usually sunny and pleasant, making golfing enjoyable all year round. There are two golf courses just outside the city of Granada – Santa Clara and Granada Club de Golf. There is a third course on the coast, directly south of Granada near Motril - Los Moriscos, and a fourth course to the north of Granada, close to Granada airport – Medina Elvira. One of our villas, situated on the edge of Granada, offers tailor-made golf packages for weekend/mid-week or longer stays. A set of clubs can be hired for around 12€ per day from the golf courses, meaning you don’t have to bring your own with you.
Skiing:
The Sierra Nevada ski resort is located at Pradollano, 2,100m high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and it is quite small in comparison to other European resorts and is less well-known outside of Spain than many of the resorts in France and Italy. However, the facilities are considered top rate and it has, therefore, hosted numerous national and international ski events. Natural snow is supplemented by snow cannons on some runs, and many skiers are pleasantly surprised to find that, because of its southerly position, the air temperature is usually warmer than other resorts.
The fact that it is less well-known is actually a plus, since it is not as busy – except at weekends and during Spanish holidays when locals come to ski – and the UK February half-term is excellent value for money as it is not considered high season in terms of prices and will generally be fairly quiet.
Walking:
‘Senderismo’ as it is called in Spanish, is a very popular pastime in Andalucía, as the sunny days invite you to get outside and enjoy the spectacular countryside around and there are so many places to explore and enjoy.
To get to know all the paths and routes in the Granada province would probably take a lifetime, but it is well worth spending some time exploring as there are walks to suit all ages and fitness.
Las Alpujarras is a particularly delightful area to explore on foot and there are many well-signposted walking routes, ranging from a short stroll, to day long hikes into the Sierra Nevada. You can walk to the top of the highest mountains in the Iberian Peninsua – El Veleta (3,398m) and Mulhacén (3,482m) but these climbs are best attempted in July and August, when the air is that bit cooler at high altitude, but the risk of rain and low cloud is lower than during the rest of the year.
