Further details for this holiday chalet rental in Les Houches, France

Holidays in Les Houches at Chalet Pic Rouge: The chalet is perfect for families and small groups of friends who want to be independent and enjoy the benefits of private parking, veranda and garden, as well as proximity to ski slopes, shops and other local amenities. The property is compact but well-equipped and having two bathrooms is a real bonus. A car is useful but not essential as all guests have free use of the Chamonix Valley buses and trains and door to door transfers from Geneva Airport are easily arranged. Les Houches is an attractive town with some characterful traditional architecture and has two well-stocked supermarkets (10 minutes walk away) bakeries, bank, post office, tourist office (offering cheap internet access), newsagent, chemist, cycle shop and launderette and there are numerous ski and snowboard shops and rental outlets - the nearest is 150 m from the chalet. There are bars and restaurants but for more variety you can head for Chamonix's night life - an evening bus runs in high season.

The Skiing: The Chamonix Valley offers a phenomenal amount of skiing and snowboarding for all levels from beginner to advanced. Les Houches is an expanding ski domain of 60 km of pistes rising to 1969 m, and is especially appreciated for its long tree-lined runs and new snowpark. The Le Tourchet beginners' slopes are 3 minutes walk from the chalet, while the Bellevue cable car is 1.2 km, but easily accessed on the free ski bus, which stops at the bottom of the Le Tourchet lift. The Prairon gondola is a little further on, while the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 5-10 minute drive or bus ride away. Beyond Chamonix, the Flegere and La Balme domains offer fabulously scenic above the tree-line runs, while the Grands Montets is a high-altitude snow-haven where off-piste legends are made. But there again you could always head for Les Contamines, Megeve and the Grand Massif and even through the tunnel to Courmayeur in Italy. The ski hire shop is a 5 minute walk from the chalet.

Summer stays for Hikers, Bikers & Families: Strategically sited by Europe's highest mountain massif and on the Tour de Mont Blanc and GR5 hiking trails, Les Houches is a magnet for alpinists and walkers. Many trails start from the village itself but by hopping on the free bus or train, you have access to all the amazing hiking terrain of the Chamonix Valley and beyond. With its panoramic views of Mt. Blanc, the Grand Balcon Sud is a favourite. From June to September, (the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers train run most of the year) the ski lifts can whisk you up to 2000 metres in a matter of minutes, from where you can contour around the flank of the mountains to get the best of the views with minimum effort! Mountain bikers have plenty of choice of route and the chalet offers the convenience of a large veranda for parking bikes undercover. With its sunny garden, great views and veranda with hammock and easy chairs, Chalet Pic Rouge is perfect for relaxing but there are plenty of family activities on offer too.

Other Activities: Husky sledging, Alpine wildlife park, donkey trekking, river rafting, scenic train rides, glacier views, golf, high ropes, climbing wall

Superb Chalet and Ski Area

Ari Daniel London, UK
Review Submitted: April 16, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
Brilliant place to stay and really well equipped for a self-catering place, tv, dvd, ipod dock. Amazing sunset views and great location Very private but handy for ski hire, shops and good bar and take away pizzas down the road. Beginners' slopes really close, for other lifts the free ski bus was OK but not that frequent out of season, we discovered. Car was useful to get to other Cham Valley areas, Courmayeur and Megeve. Chalet had a homely alpine feel to it, lots of nice small touches, unpretentious but comfortable and it was very clean, well heated and lots of hot water. Really good kitchen with full size oven, hob and dishwasher -useful because with the poor exchange rate eating at restaurants was not an option. The living area is a great place to relax after a days skiing too. For a group of friends or family who want to be independent it fits the bill. We were six, so having the second bathroom was essential. Upstairs was on the small side, but as a sleeping area its fine. Thanks for a great stay, hope to come back next season.

Lovely chalet, great views.

Review Submitted: March 12, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
Have stayed here twice and love the place. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived, is well cared for and beautifully presented.
The information accurately describes the property and its facilities which include a lovely kitchen and sitting room with fantastic hot showers (very welcome after a hard days skiing or walking!) The location is great and during our september visit we loved sitting out on the verandah in the sun for breakfast, relaxing in the hammock after a wonderful days walking and watching the sunset on the jagged peaks of the mont blanc range (amazing views!).
Its also really good to find a place that isnt just a tourist resort but still feels authentic, with a good mix of good restaurants, bars and shops close by, but still keeping a rural feel with plenty of peace and quiet.
Its quite useful having a car but we also made use of the free buses and one of our party took the minibus transfer from geneva which brought them right to the door. Local transport is also good for getting back after a long walk up the valley. The walking is absolutely stunning and its good to make use of the lifts so you can get to the high walks quickly.
We were very lucky with the skiing. The best week we've ever had! The snow was perfect and it was great to ski in so many different resorts in the valley and to ski in Italy (Courmayeur only 25 minutes away) as well.
The owner was very helpful with information about the chalet and the area.
We really enjoyed staying here. The chalet is a gem, the location is perfect and the mountains breathtaking. Hope to visit again!

Good Location, Charming Chalet

Review Submitted: February 4, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
Great Chalet, good location, lots of hot water, lovely well equipped kitchen, and owner was very informative and accommodating too.
The property details (notes) tell you about the restricted height but should also state that only two of the "Sleeps 7” are downstairs. The height had us crawling to the bathroom through a corridor, not a problem for two of us but you do have to pass through two sleeping areas to get there - more over the seventh bed is actually along side the bath, whoever sleeps here would have their feet almost touching the toilet ! In my opinion not suitable for very young children due to the steep spiral stairs. Also - beware, it must be absolutely and totally spick and span on leaving or you'll be charged extra for cleaning from the deposit!
Owner's Response: As new owner of the property I'd like to thank my first reviewer for taking the trouble to comment in detail and at the same time I'll address the points they raise.

I believe the property layout is accurately described both in the 'introduction' and in the information sections on the 'bedrooms', where it is explained that there is a double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor, two singles on the mezzanine and a twin/triple room in the loft under the eaves.

The nature of a mezzanine is that it is an open sleeping area, often, as in this case above the sitting room, thereby affording less privacy than a conventional bedroom. The corridor from the mezzanine to the second bathroom and twin/triple room is low-ceilinged and guests must stoop. But guests in the double room downstairs have no need to use the upstairs bathroom as they have their own en-suite, so they don't need to pass through the mezzanine, where others are sleeping. The upstairs bathroom is therefore principally for the use of guests sleeping on the mezzanine and in the separate twin/triple bedroom. That's the great thing about having the second bathroom.

The 'seventh' bed, is a comfortable folding bed, which for convenience is stored behind a curtain in the upstairs bathroom. When 6 or 7 guests are booked into the chalet, the bed is wheeled across the corridor and placed in the twin/triple bedroom by the caretaker. When, as in the case of my reviewer and companion, only two are staying in the chalet, there is no need to have it out, which is why the reviewer found the bed in the bathroom, folded behind the curtain. It certainly would be very odd indeed to expect a guest to sleep in the bathroom, I agree!

When a family with young children book the chalet, a safety gate is in place on the spiral staircase.

Many of my guests have commented on how clean the chalet was on their arrival. My caretaker and I do have high standards, which reflect the quality of holiday we wish our guests to experience.
