Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Lucca, Italy

The apartment is located on the third floor of a : 16th century palazzo, once the home of Boccherini, the Lucchese violinist and composer who created The Minuet and along with Puccini, one of Lucca's famous son's. The steps (70 but not steep) are worth the climb when you see the amazing views of the mountains from the large picture windows, from which you look out over a piazza, red terracotta rooftops, an evocative 12thcentury bell tower and the ragged white iced or purple mountains in the distance. ?The décor is all light cream interiors, all the better to highlight the traditional ochre of the surrounding buildings and the multicoloured parade in the piazza below. The windows are well placed to catch - if you are lucky - one of the regular traditional parades that pass beneath. In the middle of the piazza is a white marble sculpture of a toga robed woman who carries an urn on her shoulder. She stands regally over a great marble bath guarded by lions and from here the locals fill their bottles with fresh spring water.

The light and spacious high ceiling flat: consists of an entrance hall, a sitting room, separate kitchen, bathroom, huge romantic bedroom and spectacular views over Piazza San Salvatore and across the red rooftops of Lucca to the mountains of the Garfagnana and Northern Tuscany beyond.

“My home in Lucca is a special place,: a magical place where the light is golden. As the sun sets over the mountains, outside the window a thin gold line appears on the wall. Opposite, on the far wall a wide shadow of dappled gold. ?Sometimes when I wake up, early in the morning or in the middle of the night and I catch myself lying there facing the window and the wide sky that shifts with clouds or is speckled with stars and the lights burning on the mountain far away, I think I must be dreaming. I cannot, for a moment, remember how I came to be here. That 800 year old bell tower, a tapestry of fine medieval brickwork and stone, changing colours from sunrise to sunset. Each piece of broken stone of grey, yellow, cream, black, broken representing a patchwork of other lives witnessed through the ages, and the veils and layers of my own life whispering across the piazza, and a round window half way up like a porthole from which the swallows and I come and go year after year'' Ciara Ferguson.

Fabulous, gorgeous, glorious.

This is a fabulous, gorgeous, glorious apartment. Big words, but they fit this place. It’s atmospheric, bright and comfortable- high ceilings, beautifully tiled floors, gloriously romantic furniture (the huge canopied bed deserves a special mention as it’s possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in), and lovingly chosen details everywhere. And that’s all before you open the shutters. As soon as you do, and look out at the red tiled roofs, bell towers, and the mountains beyond, and then down to all the Lucca life pottering along in the square- you realise you have the best gilded seats in the house. We spent many happy hours sitting by the balcony here- watching people fill their water bottles from the white lady statue, reading books from the great selection in the apartment’s bookshelves, clinking glasses of prosecco bought in the wonderful wine shop- which is next door to the wonderful fruit and veg shop- which is literally next door… and doing some first class Tuscan daydreaming.
(On the practical side, there’s a great shower and washing machine in the apartment too. Despite the scorchio July heat, we were always presentable for our evening passagiata.)
The apartment seems to be near everything in Lucca- 10 minutes walk to Piazza Napoleon where there was a different outdoor music concert almost every night of our stay. (Lucca Festival in July, highly recommended- no need to buy tickets, the music drifts happily over the fixed seating.) We ate fantastic food and became aperativo aficionados- between 7 & 9pm, little bars/enotecas provide great snacks along with every glass. Even the railway station outside the city walls is only a 15 minute walk (if you miss your train connection, they do fine paninis in the station café by the way). Lucca in turn, isnear so many great places in Tuscany/Liguria. We followed Chiara, the owner’s recommendations for some trips: to Barga in the mountains, and the Cinqueterra. We particularly loved ridiculously picturesque Portovenere, which sells jars of the best pesto you will ever eat in your life. We took a ferry there from La Spezia, which gave us a big buzzy non-touristy city burst- a good contrast to elegant beauteous Lucca.
I loved this part of Italy, and loved staying in this beautiful apartment. It really began to feel like home (especially after I’d cooked up the best fresh pesto I'd ever eaten in my life, in one of the copper pans in the kitchen). Ten days was too short. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

An exquisite, unique, unforgettable place

The apartment is beautiful and a hell of a find for someone interested in the Tuscan retreat. It would be such a nice honeymoon hideout or anniversary treat. I can't imagine a better located pied a terre - a view over the rooftops to the mountains in the distance, big, airy, bright rooms overlooking a gorgeous square, the distant church bell chiming the hour at exactly nineteen minutes past the previous hour, and three storeys below, the best fruit and veg shop bursting with colour and vigorous chat and the best wine cellar in town just beside that, and a fountain wherefrom bubbles your daily drinking water - with the properties of health give) and those blue mountains in the distance. There's plenty to do - and buy and eat and drink and listen to and laugh and cry at - in Lucca but it was nice to take a holiday from the holiday. And it's nice to know you don't need a car. We went to the Gulf (Golf?) of Poets and the Cinqueterre villages by train and ferry and more ferry and it was just jaw droppingly byooriful.

The apartment had everything we needed anyway, including colourful - in a good way - neighbours who proved very helpful when we overloaded the appliances, a regular occurence in any building in Italy never mind 16th Century palazzos. There were plenty of maps and mags about Italy to hand a fantastic insider local list of what to do and where to go in Lucca and beyond. And apart from the lovely touches in the decor there is even a small collection of gruesome Italian murder mysteries to read in the dead heat of a July afternoon.

Just writing this I miss Italy now, even the noisy, frustrating bits because I always knew there was a fabulous retreat high above a picturesque square that I briefly called home.

Review Submitted: June 26, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Stayed for 7 nights during June 2009.
I've ticked the 'fair' button but it's not fair - certainly below average despite it's special location and at first appearance 'chic' (sorry to use a french word) decoration and furniture. Apart from the bed, which was really comfortable, the rest of the apartment wasn't and sadly not easy to relax in.
There was a trickle of water from the kitchen taps although oddly the shower pressure was excellent. There was a dishwasher but not enough crockery or cuttlery to fill it, i.e. only 2 cups/mugs. Many things not right about the facilities but I'll mention just two - one highly frustrating, and one downright dangerous.Tin-opener was neithetr use nor ornament - I hung it on the wall with other strange things! The electric iron was a safety concern as the cable was worn through in several places and bare wires could be seen -needless to say I lived in crinkly shirts for the rest of the stay.
Suggestions for fix - try living in the apartment for several days, cooking, washing, relaxing, perhaps watching TV, and you'll see that my comments are genuine and fair.
Owner's Response: I am the owner and I think some, but not all, your comments were entirely fair. There is a certain spirit to Lucca and to my apartment that is perhaps not for everyone. It is after all not usual to live in a 16th century palazzo in the heart of the historic yet lively walled town of Lucca . The apartment was in fact my home for two years before renting, and I hope I will happily, dreamily and comfortably live there again. It is a unique place with a special location, as you pointed out. I love the romance of it, and, having rented it out over the past two years, I was very pleased to find that most people felt that and expressed how nice it was to stay there. It is because everything is at your fingertips - the best deli/fruit and veg market shop next door and a great choice of local trattoria's within a minute's walk. And that you can see the mountains in the distance over the red rooftops and all of italian life on the ground makes it clear why so many people dream, as I did, of living in Italy Under the Tuscan Sun. I understand that French antique furniture might not be to everyone's taste and an eclectic collection of original artwork is by nature subjective but I think the dramatic decor of the apartment, is made very clear in the 12 photographs on the website. I must admit, I cannot remember the last time I had cause to use a can opener in Lucca so I assumed it worked. It will be replaced. As will the iron. Clearly wear and tear and an unforgiveable oversight. As for the 2 mugs, and the cup collection, two more will be added. I can't however promise a dishwasher full, but, there is enough there for most people in what is, after all, a one bedroom apartment.
As for the water pressure, that is something you have to live with in a historic building.
Clearly, Lucca in all its aged glory and my unusual apartment in the centre of that were not for you. I accept that some people visiting Tuscany on holiday might eschew Lucca and excustions to nearby Pisa, Florence, the Cinque Terre and the beach at Viareggio for a nice cuppa, feet up in front of the telly, and, well, a smoothly working can opener. C'est la vie (sorry to use French).
