Beaches- best by far!:
Beaches in this area have been voted in the top 8 in Europe and Top 10 in the World, they are generally Island Beaches, reached by cheap water taxis or small ferries accros the blue waters of the Ria Formosa Lagoons, the beaches are beautiful soft white sand, gently sloping into the ocean.
There are beaches to discover that are seldom used, even in summer! there are also the busier beaches at Tavira Island and Barrill, with their Bars, restaurants and shops. These two beaches also have water sports.
Fishing villages of the area:
Cabanas- A lovely little village 5 minutes from Tavira, many bars and restaurants, and Quazimodos music bar!
Fuseta- Lovely little village with a nice busy square, Fuseta has a beach as well as ferries to the island.
Olhao- Walk into the little side streets leading away from the Marina to discover the true old streets with shops, bars and, restaurants. there is a large fresh food market here also.
Santa Luzia- The sleepiest and best little Fishing village on the Algarve, loads of fantastic restaurants and bars.
Recommended restaurants- Vincents(French quality with good portions), Casa do Abade(authentic Portuguese), Canto Azul( varied menu run by a Dutch couple), Sol e mar(fish), Capelo's(famous throughout Portugal)
Bars- Best bar is MeiaPipa( Live music most nights)
Take the water taxi from the jetty in the centre of the village to Terra Estreita Beach for a day of total relaxation on a beautiful beach which is always a little quieter than you would expect.
Golf:
Nearest Golf is Benamor, 5 minutes by car another two championship courses are only a further 5 minutes further along the same road- Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima.
Golf courses in the Eastern Algarve are generally cheaper than in the busier Western Algarve.
