Finca Avellana is a large Catalan farmhouse set in 13 tranquil acres of Spanish farmland where olives, almonds and carobs are grown. Only 20 minutes drive to the golden beaches of the Costa Dorada and the birdwatching of the Ebro Delta, we are near the mountains and within walking distance of the River Ebro. The recently converted accommodation offers luxury for a romantic getaway. Enjoy fabulous views of the mountains from your own terrace and enjoy a private jacuzzi bath, whilst sipping a glass of wine or two. There is also a plunge pool in the courtyard and large summer kitchen and BBQ. We are ideally located for walking, cycling (we have mountain bikes for hire), birdwatching and horse riding or just relaxing and sightseeing. We are within walking distance of the local village which has a few bars and shops, and only 8kms from the small city of Tortosa which has restaurants, banks, supermarkets and bars. It also has a castle and cathedral and Jewish Quarter to explore.

We are a short walk downhill to the village of Aldover and the River Ebro. A 10 minute drive will bring you to Tortosa which has many shops, banks and restaurants as well as the historical sites around the old quarter, cathedral and castle. We are also close to the natural Park of Els Ports. Great for walking and exploring. Horta St. Joan. where Picasso spent some time, is well worth a visit. There are many bodegas where great wine can be sampled and bought. Further afield the quaint coastal ports of L'Ampolla and St Carles,on the Coast Dorada are only 20 minutes away, as are the wetlands of the Ebro Delta.Great for birdwatching, cycling and water sports. Tarragona has many Roman ruins to visit and is an hours drive away, or, for the more active, Port Aventura theme and water park is close to Tarragona and Reus. The city of Barcelona can be reached by an inexpensive two hour train ride,and Valencia is two hours to the south. We are ideally located for many varied activities.

Cycle hire: We have mountain bikes for hire to enable you to explore the local countryside. We can also organise horse riding, guided walks, guided bird watching trips and wine tours of the Terra Alta region. New for 2009 will be a 16mx 5m swimming pool. We will also have a ground floor apartment available from early 2009.

Finca Avellana is a hidden treasure in the beautiful Ebro Valley. We spent two weeks in May in the Eagle View apartment, and were very impressed – it is well designed, thoughtfully equipped, and is spotlessly clean. The large south-facing balcony, with UV protection sun-shade, has amazing views, and usually the only sound to be heard there was birdsong. Walks in the local area, along pretty country lanes and paths, down into barrancas, and along the Via Verde, kept us very well occupied, and every time we set out, we found more routes to explore. Aldover is a charming village, with three bars, and a couple of shops; Tortosa, by contrast, is a bustling, attractive town, with interesting shops, market hall and restaurants, and a lovely old town area and cathedral.

Stuart and Hazel are very welcoming and considerate hosts, and were extremely helpful, offering any amount of beach equipment, maps, and useful advice, which we very much appreciated. Their generosity was also demonstrated by the various extras available, such as fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables from the garden, books, DVDs, etc. They work hard to provide an excellent holiday experience, and deserve every success.
