Location and history:
Almunecar is a lovely town located on the Tropical Coast of Granada, on the Eastern side of the Costa del Sol. It was founded by Phoenician traders 3000 years ago and lies right at the heart of the Granada coastline, which stretches from the end of Malaga's Costa del Sol until the beginning of the Costa de Almería, making Almuñécar one of the southern Spain's most attractive stretches of coastline. Almunecar is home to 5 miles of beaches, ideal for practising a wide range of water sports or just walking under the palm trees.
Golf:
There are three 18 hole golf courses within half an hour's drive. Although none of these are championship courses they are in beautiful surroundings and considerably cheaper and less crowded than some of the more popular ones around Malaga.
Baviera golf is 20 minutes drive west toward Malaga close to Nerja.
Campo de Golf los Moriscos is 20 minutes drive east along the coast near Salobrena. This is a new 18 hole course with a green fee of 40 euros. Tee times can be booked with their English speaking staff and clubs can be hired.
The third course Motril-playa is another 10 minutes further on from Salobrena.
Mountain biking and Treking:
Las Alpujarras is at a 30min drive away from Cotobro. This area offers plenty of mountain bike and walking trails ranging from easy to very difficult. In summer, when snow rececedes it is possible to ride or trek up to 3400m in the mulhacen mountain. An ascent of the Mulhacén (3,482 metres) is an attractive option for walking in high summer. For those who can not or do not want to cover the almost two thousand metres height difference from Trevélez, there are two options. The first one is to drive up to the Hoya del Portillo (2,150 metres) from Capileira. The second one is to make a reservation for the bus service up to the Alto del Chorillo (2,710 metres). This ´Servicio de Interpretación de las Altas Cumbres´, is a bus service from Capileira (about one hour) during the weekends and bank holidays in the summer. Information can be found on the website of the Ministerio de Medio Ambiento del Gobierno de España.
