From St Martin des Puits you can visit an enormous number of sites to suit all tastes, starting with a visit to our local 9th century chapel with its 12th century frescoes, or swimming in the River Orbieu either here or in nearby Lagrasse or Ribaulte. Just 8km further along the valley is Chateau Termes one of the famous Cathar strongholds. These are fortresses perched on limestone outcrops where the persecuted Cathars sought sanctuary in the 12th century and include the spectacular Peyrepertuse, Queribus and Puilaurens, all of which can easily be visited from St Martin des Puits.
If your prefer swimming in the sea then just an hours drive takes you to the Mediterranean coastline where you are spoilt for choice of golden sandy beaches. If one doesn't suit you can easily move on to the next. All have something different to offer. You can also visit the shallow inland salt lakes and sample the locally produced mussels and oysters direct from the fishermen.
Visit the World Heritage Canal du Midi and either travel on it by pleasure boat or walk or cycle along its tree lined banks. The villages alongside have the obligatory cafe, restaurant or wine cave. The perfect place to spend a hot summers day.
Feed the body as well as the soul and sample the produce of the land. There are literally hundreds of vineyards which welcome you to come in and sample their wine with no obligation to buy. We are in Corbiere country, the Canal du Midi is in the heart of the Minervois and towards the coast you will find the Fitous and Rivesaltes.If food interests you as much aswine sample the local goats cheeses, foie gras and boar pate, as well as the fish. A visit to the local markets at Lezignan and Narbonne is a must for those in search of local produce and atmosphere.Sit outside one of the village/town cafes with a coffe and croissant or glass of wine and watch the world go by
