Le Vieux Grenier (The Old Granary) is situated in a rural hamlet just outside the village of St Quentin and close to the lakes of the Haute Charente. Charente is one of the most attractive areas in SW France with its gentle rolling scenery. It is reputed to be the second sunniest area of France (only surpassed by the Cote d’Azur). This traditional farm cottage has been renovated to a high standard and offers discerning holidaymakers quality, homely self-catering accommodation in a peaceful private environment. The house is on 2 levels - the large master bedroom with original open beams and bath/shower and WC is on the first floor together with the single bedroom. The ground floor has a good sized twin room with its own shower room / WC. It also has an open plan kitchen / diner and separate lounge with direct access to the sun terrace, pool and the spacious garden with a dedicated BBQ area.

The House: The fitted kitchen is well equipped with all that is necessary to cater for a family on holiday including cutlery, crockery, utensils and glassware. The comfortable lounge has a selection of books and games with satellite TV and radio available together with DVD & CD players. There is a spacious garden with a private swimming pool and terraces - completed 2008. The pool has salt water sterilisation which is kinder to the skin, eyes and the environment than traditional chlorination. It is fitted with an alarm to comply with French law for children’s safety. On ground level there is house access, twin bedroom and shower room as well as the kitchen / diner and lounge. There are only minimal steps to the sun terrace however the house is not suitable for wheel chairs. Changeover day is Saturday but alternatives may be possible subject to availability. For lets longer than one week fresh towels and linen will be provided weekly. Baby sitting can be arranged locally

Relaxation and Activities: The terraces are equipped with all the furniture necessary for sunbathing, lounging and alfresco dining. The distance views are excellent and the garden spends most of the day in the sun. As it runs virtually east / west it benefits particularly from the late evening sunshine. A separate BBQ area is available in the lower garden. In addition to the Lakes with the availability of many water sports and fishing there are two 18 hole golf courses within easy reach and close by there are the following : adventure park ( zip wire - climbing – bungee ) - ornithology - Velo-rail - National WW2 monuments - Roman baths / archaeological sites - Nautilus water park in Angouleme - and many attractive historical towns and villages. The nearest town (Chabanais) is 6 km. and the very attractive La Rochefoucauld and Rochechouart with their fabulous châteaux are close by. There is a selection of good supermarkets within the area and there are regular markets in some of the nearby towns

Surrounding Area: Various restaurants and small hotels can be found in the towns of the surrounding area; particularly Chabanais, Rochechouart and St Junien. Both Limoges and Angouleme Airports are about 40 mins away and Poitiers is about 1 hour. Chabanais is approximately 300 miles from Caen and St Malo and approximately 500 miles from Calais. Cognac, Futuroscope, and Bordeaux are all within reach as is the west coast with its great beaches. The neighbouring Departments of Vienne and Dordogne with all their attractions are only a few miles away.

Other Activities: Golf - two 18 hole courses within 30 minutes drive -- various watersports are available at the Charente Lakes

Ideal relaxing holiday for a family with a fantastic swimming pool. A large garden with trees and shrubs and ideal for barbecuing. The nearest town had a good supermarket and other shops and there was a local shop/restaurant/bar within walking distance. The house was very well equipped. The description was very accurate and the property was very clean and well maintained. Our family really enjoyed our time at Le Vieux Grenier and we would recommend this property.

Holiday Away from it all

We spent 2 weeks in June at this lovely Gite. The accommodation was first class with everything that to make it a home from home. Chris and Helen have obviouisly put a lot of thought into what makes a holiday special. We managed to walk to the lakes - quite a trek but well worth it when you get there. We were blessed with wonderful weather for the whole 2 weeks and the pool and garden were well used. We both like our peace and quiet and we had that here. We would recommend this gite to anyone wanting a quiet break away from it all.

A great retreat

Le Vieux Grenier was the perfect place for a get away from it all relaxing holiday. The accomodation was excellent with everything you could need provided, a real home from home including English TV. The gardens and pool were glorious, enhanced by perfect weather. The local town for essentials is 10 mins by car and there was lots to do and see within a 30 minute radius including chateaux, historic villages and lakes but it was difficult to tear ourselves away from the pool. Some may find the location a little isolated but for us it was ideal, just what we prefer and gave an enchanting night sky. Having English neighbours was a great bonus. Picking fresh juicy peaches off the tree in the garden was divine. Our 2 teenage children enjoyed it too but they are not into clubs/nightlife etc. A fantastic time had by all.

Total peace and quiet

A charming spacious old farmhouse. rennovated yet still rustic. i went to recharge my batteries with my one year old daughter and my mom and dad (in their late sixties).
We flew into angouleme which was only a 40 min drive tops. and a pleasant drive too. The farmhouse is in a very remote location, with three or four other very quiet farmhouses, the closest neighbours were extremely welcoming and made us feel like old neighbours. It was necessary to hire a car but we were so happy to enjoy the peace, we rarely used it.
The pool is really lovely and has a safety alarm, perfect if you are taking young ones as i did.
There are 3 bedrooms. the double upstairs is huge and has the most comfortable super kingsize bed i ever slept in, so combined with the peace, i'm like a recharged duracel.
I would recommend the farmhouse to anyone who like me lives in a crazy city, is always on the move and just needs to press pause for a minute. A truly lovely spot in the middle of the rolling french countryside. bliss.

The real France

We recently spent a wonderful week at Le Vieux Grenier. If you are looking for an authentic “French/France get away from it all" break this is the place for you. The cottage is spacious and full of quirky rustic charm and is furnished to a high standard. The garden is just the place in which to relax and the icing on the cake is the beautiful private pool.

The SuperU supermarket in Chabanais was stocked with patés, meat and fish and whatever your taste is for wines and beer, we're sure you'll find what you want there.

We found several excellent places to eat in the area but for a special night out we would recommend Le Roc du Boeuf in Rochechouart: we've never had a better meal. But be prepared for a relaxed meal, this is not "fast food", but definitely worth the wait.

The owners have provided an ideal base to explore a wonderful area of France. Well done.
