The Outgate Inn is closeby and provides hearty meals with Jazz nights on Fridays in season. The renowned Drunken Duck Inn at Barngates provides a favourite venue for special occasions. In the higgledy-piggledy, car-free streets of Hawkshead can be found several pubs and numerous shops as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, and the Grammar School attended by WIlliam Wordsworth. Beatrix Potter's house itself, is just a couple of minutes down the road. Cut over the hill and past Tarn Hows to Coniston to enjoy Ruskin's house, travel down the lake in style on a solar or steam ship, or slip back over to the Langdale Valleys, for some of the most special views the Lakes has to offer. An enchanting place at any time of the year.

Additional information about rental rates

  • The Granary is extremely popular and has been booked for 38 weeks or more in each of the last 3 years - 2009 has proven to be the busiest year yet. • We accept payment by cheque. You may also pay by PayPal or debit/credit card (via PayPal money request) but will be responsible for any additional charges. We request a £50 security deposit which will be refunded within 5 working days of departure. Payment in full must be received 6 weeks prior to arrival.
  • Change over days - we ask that you arrive after 3pm on your first day and vacate by 10am on the day of departure to allow for servicing.

Stairs from the hallway lead up to the high quality kitchen, with its wealth of fitted units and black granite work tops, which in turn opens through glass dividing doors into the smart sitting/dining room at the front of the cottage. Pretty views take in the gentle countryside with the summit of Latterbarrow beyond. The cottage is stylish and modern, using natural woods complemented with warm and natural contemporary colours. An impressive oak floor runs through the upstairs. A back door from the kitchen opens onto your own rear patio with garden table and four chairs for outdoor dining - a lovely spot to catch the afternoon and evening sun whilst relaxing after a busy day. Two cars can park in named spaces at the front of The Granary.

This charming cottage in the heart of the Lake District is certainly home from home, with everything you could possibly want, from internet connection to a corkscrew. The Granary is impeccably maintained with a designer finish. The village of Hawkshead is a short distance away with tiny twisty streets and delights around each corner, from shops and pubs to Beatrix Potters house nearby. It is a walkers haven as well as a great retreat.

This fantastic cottage in the heart of the Lakes is just a delight. It is just a short walk to the center of Hawkshead, where in the tiny twisty streets you can find delights at every bend. A country pub is just five minutes walk in the opposite direction. The Granary is equiped to the highest standard anyone could ask for. Once you have visited you will come back time and time again.

The Granary

HRCD London
Review Submitted: March 18, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
I stayed at The Granary during a long weekend away with my boyfriend and some friends at the end of last year.

We were lucky enough to have snow during our stay, and the scenery was breathtaking - definitely what we signed up for!

The Granary was more comfortable, really beautifully decorated and finished (to a much, much higher standard than I would have expected of a holiday cottage), and we were able to not only use it as a great base for trips out in the nearby countryside, but we also enjoyed a couple of super nights in.

It's very well equipped with everything you could need, from pots, pans, glasses and mugs, to board games, DVDs and books (including books and loads of information on the local area), there really is everything you could need there!

We had some great nights out at local establishments (all recommended in the visitor's book / local information guides), and we did some really great walks in the nearby countryside and activities including horse riding. You are literally right on the doorstep of beautiful landscape and scenery, and there is so much to do and experience!

Highlights for me would include horse riding, a boat trip around Lake Windemere (somehwere I had always wanted to visit), a gorgeous breakfast and wander round the shops in nearby Ambleside (where we bought some fantastic local produce!), drinks and a meal at The Drunken Duck bar and restaurant in Ambleside, and walks through the beautiful countryside.

The house was spotless, comfortable and excellently well-maintained.

I really couldn't recommend The Granary more highly, and I hope to go back very soon!
