Photos and Description of this County Wicklow holiday cottage A restored old estate Property with character, in farmyard location.

This property is situated deep in the heart of the Irish countryside. It is snuggled mid way up a hilly landscape within a farmyard. People live on the farm so, while both mews and farmhouse are private, they are not totally isolated. With oil-fired central heating and wood-burning stoves, it is cosy in winter. Sheep graze the surrounding fields, and sometimes deer may be spotted. For wet or wintry days a music centre, TV with video and satellite channels, and broadband for those with their own laptop, are available. There are horses and dogs on the farm, and local farmers have sheep and cattle also. By foot, one can easily reach a riding-school, and a local country pub. The property is on the Wicklow Way, a famous walking route, and a nearby hill is covered with woods, and popular with walkers. The medieval city of Kilkenny is less than an hour's drive away, as is the coastal town of Wexford, well-known for its international Wexford Opera Festival in autumn, and also Glendalough.

The mews is 3 miles from the village of Shillelagh, and 1 mile to Coolkenno, where a small grocery shop attends to everyday needs. Tullow, in the county of Carlow, is 7 miles, and here there are 3 big supermarkets, 2 pharmacies, haberdashery, furniture and gift shops, 3 garages, beauty salons and hairdressers. Near Tullow is Mt. Wolseley, a big hotel with leisure centre and golfing resort. Bar food is excellent here, as is the restaurant. In Tullow there's an Indian restaurant which we often frequent, and a local riverbank eatery. Less than 15 minutes drive from the Mews is Bunclody, a charming village with excellent restaurants, and a tree lined stream which flows down the middle of the village. Just less than an hour from the mews is Kilkenny, a beautiful medieval city with 2 cathedrals, a castle and numerous shops and restaurants. And less than an hour in the opposite direction is the seaside town of Courtown, which comes alive in summer and is pleasant in winter.

The Mews: "Delightful!"

Friend of Bruce Bristol, U.K.
Review Submitted: July 27, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Very peaceful location, lovely setting at the foot of a field & with a private garden. It is part of a farmyard complex which makes it more interesting as there is the 'big house' & a stables attached. The cottage surpassed our expectations from the website & in our view is bigger & lovelier than the photos demonstrate. The Mews is the perfect cosy cottage that you'd hope for; it has been modernised whilst retaining character features. The living room is v. comfortable & I imagine very warm & cosy on chilly evenings with the wood stove lit & the curtains drawn. The additional summer room (breakfast/dining room) is a lovely light spot to sit looking out & makes the cottage much more spacious than it might otherwise feel. The bathroom is a modern wet room with fab shower. The bedroom is comfy & cosy & traditional. The owner was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Although the cottage backs onto a yard with stables & visitors coming & going, it caused no disturbance for us at all. The owner has a dog who often keeps guard of The Mews but is impeccably behaved. It isn't a good location if you're looking for nightlife as it's a few miles to the nearest town but then there's no need to go out when staying in such a lovely place. Although the cottage is passed by The Wicklow Way, the local walks often involve conifer forests forestry commission style; the local scenery is pleasant but not dramatic. However, it's about an hour's drive to The Wicklow Mountains which are fantastic & well worth a visit expecially Glendalough where there are different waymarked walks. English walkers note that there is not the proliferation of footpaths in Ireland that we are used to in England. Kilkenny made a good day trip for sightseeing & culture. It took us (driving on the slower side) approx. 1.5 hours from Dublin airport to get to The Mews. Highly recommended for the cottage itself especially.
Owner's Response: I'd like to thank the reviewer for going to the trouble to write this. It's our first year of letting and it's encouraging to get a good review. The dog's name is Tara, and she loves sitting outside the Mews. She a gentle soul, who lives in hope of being patted, but does look like a guard dog. We confine her elsewhere when guests prefer.

We hope to keep our standards up, and provide our guests with as much useful local info as possible. These reviewers themselves generously noted down a few walks and places of interest they found, and left them for others to use.
