Coast and Beaches:
Further details – Malles is a traditional village in the real Cretan sense, not a package holiday resort. Based on agriculture, the livelihood of the local people comes from olive cultivation, growing vegetables, bee-keeping and grape cultivation for its wonderful wine or Krasi. What is happening depends on the season but at all times there is much to see and be involved with. However, for those people who still want to experience Crete’s beaches, you are but a short drive away from a great selection of clean, safe beaches. Mirtos is the nearest, a small resort with a delightful beach where you can hire wind surfers, dinghies, pedaloes. Also a good selection of tavernas. Further west is Tertsa, a smaller hamlet with lovely beaches and tavernas. Continue west for more lovely small villages, such as Keratokambos and Kastri. In the other direction to Ierapetra and further east of Ierapetra for more and more great beaches, some in cozy bays, some with tavernas, something for everyone.
The village:
Malles is the ideal location for a nature holiday. Located in a real working village, where there are still 30 working donkeys, this is where you can be a part of real Cretan village life. Malles is famous for its honey production and fine wine, served from the barrel. You will find these easily obtainable – just ask. But, you are a short drive from beaches, tavernas, supermarkets etc. and a little further away from the bright lights on the north coast.
Spiti Pavlos is situated right in the heart of Malles, a bustling mountain village with a few traditional kafenia and shops for basic essential supplies. The house, which has over the years been a mosque and the prison house was sympathetically restored to fit into the village style. The furniture is tasteful as this was to be only the owner’s holiday home. Much more comfort than a beachside apartment, but just 20 minutes away from the beaches. Well off the beaten track, but in easy driving distance of the major tourist attractions.
