The handsome bastide town of Castillonnes is worth a visit for its narrow medieval lanes, church and mid-August acrobatic high-wire acts above the main square. It's 3km SE from the chateau and the nearest place for the butcher, baker and candlestick maker!
There are tennis courts here and a Tuesday market. Other places to visit include the little market town of Eymet (night market on Tuesday in high summer), the pretty market town of St Foy la Grande on the banks of the River Dordogne, and both Bergerac and Périgueux for excellent French shopping.
Activities can easily be arranged: bicycle hire, horse riding, canoeing, and golf on the championship course at Château des Vigiers.
The area is abundant in history with many castles and medieval towns - Sarlat, Montpazier and Monflanquin. Les Eyzies is famous for its caveman dwellings and paintings and of course the many vineyards such as Monbazillac, St. Emilion and Cahors.
