Many people are surprised to learn that Spain also offers a wide ranger of winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding.
The number one location in Spain is in Andalucia , near Granada in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, only two hours away from La Orquidea , Calahonda on the Costa del Sol .
Sierra Nevada
With 80km of ski slopes including 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes, you can get around using the 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. The pistes include Green, Blue, Red and Black runs, ranging from Very Easy to Very Difficult.
The resort is open 9am to 5pm.
Golf:
In the late eighties, the Costa del Sol experienced a huge surge as a winter Golf destination and the phrase 'Costa del Golf ' was coined, to be found on road signs everywhere along the coast.
Within a six year period beginning in 1985, seventeen new Golf courses appeared, bringing the total on the Costa del Sol to thirty courses. Now, there are more than thirty Golf courses on the Costa del Sol and more than sixty Golf courses in the whole of Andalucia, Spain .
Every year, the Costa del Sol receives more than three hundred days of sunshine, perfect when starting a round of eighteen holes. The sunny climate and all year round good weather guarantee the game of Golf to be popular no matter when you visit.
The fresh Atlantic winds from the Straits of Gibraltar , mix with mild Mediterranean winds managing to moderate the temperatures. The climate is defined by the warmth of the air and the lack of any extreme atmospheric weather, due to the fact that the length of the Costa del Sol is sheltered by elevated mountainous regions, the sierras of Mijas , Blanca and Alpujata - all of which provide a protective screen against the affects of any colder northern winds.
Golf in Calahonda
There are a number of golf courses within easy reach of the resort. La Siesta is a 2 minute walk with 9 hole course, practise range putting and chipping greens. Close to Puerto Cabopino , Calahonda 's own harbour, is Cabopino Golf which is an 18 hole course.
