Stunning olive mill, built in 1764, sensitively restored & converted recently by the architect owner into a well appointed, spacious & comfortable house. Sleeps 11 people, perfect for 2 families, as there are 2 kitchens! Also possible to rent one wing as a garden apartment for 5 people. The large 12x6m. heated salt water pool is set within a delightful walled courtyard garden, with a selection of terraces & lawns for al-fresco eating, sunbathing, games & relaxing. Electric gates give access to the house, secure parking & the secluded half acre garden which includes a wildflower meadow. A peaceful location to get away from it all, yet only a couple of minutes' stroll into the centre of Lorgues with its famous market, shops & range of restaurants. The mill enjoys wonderful views over the village to the Maures mountains. This beautiful area is set between the mountains & the Mediterranean sea - perfect for touring. There are many historic villages & famous Provencal vineyards close by.

An attractive and spacious 2 bedroom garden apartment, independent & private, adjoining the owners’ own accommodation in our converted olive mill. The front door, which is in the courtyard leads into an entrance hall and on into the spacious living room. This has dining space for 6 plus a high chair, & sofas for 6 people. The sofa bed in there could accommodate a 5th person. A contemporary, fully equipped kitchen is located within the living/dining room. There is gas central heating throughout. The 2 bedrooms & bathroom are located in a separate wing with corridor access from the living room. An entryphone allows remote control of the electric gates from within the house. Outside, a dining table with 12 chairs is situated close to the front door. Further chairs & tables are available on the terraces & the lawn. On the terrace next to the heated pool are sun loungers & sun umbrellas.

Lorgues is a charming and friendly medieval village with many cafes, shops, bars and restaurants, and a vibrant market every Tuesday morning. It is situated in the heart of Provence about one hour's drive from the airports at Nice or Toulon-Hyeres, and is the 2nd most wooded region in France. Set between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and superb for touring, there are many historic villages and famous Provencal vineyards close by. An easy drive brings you to the beaches and lively resorts at Sainte Maxime (complete with Aquapark), Saint Raphael, Port Grimaud and Saint Tropez. Inland amidst breathtaking scenery, the Gorges du Verdon - the French Grand Canyon - and Lake St Croix, the largest lake in Provence, offer swimming, walking, sailing, white water rafting, kayaking and windsurfing. All just 45 minutes away. Other local attractions include the Abbaye du Thoronet, the waterfall at Sillans de Cascade, and the village of Chateaudouble set in stunning mountain scenery.

Full width mirrors and glass shelves are fitted on one wall of the bathroom. Walls are tiled with Provencal tiles and the floor tiled with tomettes. Mechanical extract ventilation is provided to outside; this is operated by the light switch.

  • The 2 bedrooms are located in a wing, which is at entrance and courtyard level. There is 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom and a bathroom in this wing. A 5th person can sleep on a sofabed in the living room, if required. The bed linen can be stored in a drawer under the sofa when it is not in use as a sofa bed. The cot is available in the twin bedroom for babies. The thick stone walls provide good insulation against the heat of the summer sun, and the cold in winter. The bedrooms are simply furnished with good quality comfortable beds, plus adequate hanging and shelf space for clothes and possessions. A full-length mirror is provided in the corridor. The floors are all tiled with local ‘tomettes’ - hexagonal quarry tiles.

Access to the house: The main auto route, the A8, is just 20 minutes away so Nice, Cannes, Aix en Provence, are all about an hour's drive. Monaco and Italy are an easy day's outing or you could take a trip to Corsica by ferry from Nice. Toulon-Hyeres, also an hour's drive to our house, is a hassle-free provincial airport served by Ryanair, or alternatively fly into Nice with a wide choice of airlines. The SNCF railway station at Les Arcs, which is 15 minutes from the house, provides fast connections to Paris (TGV 5 hours). If you prefer there is an overnight Motor rail service from Calais/Lille to Nice allowing you to bring your own car and let the train take the strain!

Lorgues facts: Lorgues is a town of just under 10,000 inhabitants, built up around a walled medieval core. Built on a south-facing hillside, ‘a village perché’, it is dominated by an enormous and imposing church – la Collégiale St. Martin – very visible, as you get close! The town dates from the 10th century, and has an intriguing history in relation to the Crusaders. The church was built in the 15th century. The narrow streets of the old village, enclosed by crumbling walls, and some beautiful towers, are worth exploring; especially as there are fountains and interesting old buildings dotted around. The main street, a rather grand tree lined boulevard, Boulevard Georges Clémenceau, is modelled on the Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence. Plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants there to relax in Our olive mill was one of 6 on this street, located to use the water from the open culvert(La Canal) which ran down the street.

Shopping and restaurants: Shopping: There are markets at Lorgues (Tues), Aups (Wed & Sat), & Salernes (Sun) and a very large Sunday Provencal market at Le Muy by the auto route (A8). The two nearest Carrefour hypermarkets are at Draguignan & Trans en Provence. Smaller supermarkets (Intermrche and Casino) are open on Sunday mornings in Lorgues, and most of the surrounding villages. Draguignan, the former capital of the Var, with its impressive county hall, provides a rich variety of individual shops, where you can buy clothes, handmade chocolates, pastries, and gifts. There is also a theatre, cinema, ten pin bowling and visiting funfairs. All the surrounding villages have a number of restaurants, serving primarily French cuisine. From the renowned Michelin-starred truffle restaurant Chez Bruno near Lorgues, to family-run French restaurants all offering 'le menu' or a la carte. For a change there are Chinese restaurants and pizza takeaways

Lorgues is a great little town with plenty of restaurants and a nice market with good but expensive produce. It's well placed for excursions to the mountains and the coast alike.

The owners have gathered together lots of information for days out. We took their advice and headed into the hills on a really hot afternoon to the little hilltop village to the north which is both cool and spectactular.

A car is essential. The entrance from the main road is quite tight but you do get used to it.

The owners proudly showed us the main house which is huge and beautifully re-furbished. We had the apartment which is lovely too and by no means second best. It's really nicely furnished with a mix of simple contemporary pieces and some local market bargains. The open plan living/dining/kitchen space with views in 3 directions makes for convivial, lively atmosphere. There are books to read and lots of games provided for the odd dull day - not that there's many of those.

The kids had lots of space in their twin room and and although the double bedroom isn't that spacious there is a large wardrobe/store opposite the door.

Outside there are several discrete areas of garden and terrace to sit in at diferent times of the day. The pool is lovely, large and clean. It's too deep for our kids to touch the bottom which was a worry at first but by the end of the week they were both swimming without armbands.

We had a truly fantastic holiday and will be back - in fact we've already booked it for 2010
Owner's Response: Lorgues certainly is a great centre for day trips inland and to the coast, but is lively enough itself, particularly on market day, with plenty of bars and restaurants. For a family of 4 or 5, the garden apartment is ideal, but for a bigger party, or 2 families, consider renting the whole house! One big asset is the location, which is very near the centre of the town, but the views out are almost rural. We hope to cultivate more of the 2200 sq.m. garden before next season, in addition to the garden and courtyard which Jon describes above.

We stayed here during May and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The apartment had been thoughtfully furnished to a very high standard. The pool area was a real highlight which meant we did less exploring and more relaxing! The location was ideal as restaurants and bars in Lorgues town was only a few minutes walk away. Some of the streets were a little steep though if you have difficulty walking. All in all a great location and apartment and we would definitely return again.
