Photos and Description of this South Tunisia holiday house Self Catering House on desert island, 5 bedroom, sleeps 10

The Islands of Kerkennah, one of the last undiscovered charms of the Mediterranean yet to be experienced. Forget the fast pace of life in the Western world, leave your laptops and mobiles at home and step back in time and escape. See the fishing dhows go out on the tranquil waters for the catch of the day, the old ladies on their horse and carts pop into the fields to get food for the sheep in their beautifully bright coloured clothes, experience the frantic chaos of the age old wedding traditions as the islands come alive to celebrate in August, have your hands and feet hennaed, or sit in the local cafe trying a hubbly bubbly, drinking mint tea and playing cards with the locals as the sun goes down. On the island, the first language is Arabic, then French and then English. DAR CHLOUK stands in an enclosed area with a large private back garden (yet to be landscaped). The large house has traditional Arabic features, sleeps 10 and is a great get-away for family and friends.

The island of Kerkennah is situated 18 miles from the mainland of Tunisia, and it takes an hour to get from the busy city of Sfax to the tranquil waters of Kerkennah. Kerkennah really is a place to get away from it all and escape. Local customs have not changed for hundreds of years, and you will get a very warm welcome when you arrive. Whether you are invited to a local wedding, asked to sit under a tree and share a glass of mint tea, or are taken out on a sea picnic in a traditional dhow for the day with the possibility of seeing dolphins, it all adds to the rich memories for you to take home. Life is slow and laid back in the villages (apart from August which is 'wedding season!'). Within easy reach of DAR CHLOUK however, you can visit local seafood restaurants, swim at the local hotel, visit a Roman fort, or pop back to the mainland to walk round one of the most unspoilt and colourful Medinas in Tunisia. Kerkennah is a great location for bird watching and walking too.

Further details for this holiday house rental in South Tunisia, Tunisia

OUTSIDE AREA AROUND THE HOUSE: The house stands in an enclosed area with a large private back garden (yet to be landscaped). Within the grounds are well established pomegranate trees, a fig tree, an olive tree and an incredibly old carob tree. There is a front terrace and a bigger back terrace with a covered well situated on the back terrace. This is an old established well which you are welcome to use. Rain water has accumulated on the roof (as is a standard design in Tunisia), and the water travels down into the well until required. It isn't recommended to drink the tap water although this is fine to use for cleaning your teeth. Bottled water is available very reasonably from the local village shop 5 minutes walk away. As the sun goes down, it is possible to move the main dinner table out on to the back terrace and eat outside until late into the night.

HOW TO GET HERE: Sfax Airport (the nearest mainland airport) receives flights from Orly, France Monastir Airport (2nd closest) receives charter flights from the UK through thomsonsfly.com and flythomascook.com Tunis Airport receives scheduled flights with Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa and Tunis Air among other airlines. Internal flights are also available from Tunis Airport to Sfax Airport (internal flight takes just under an hour and is approx £5o per person each way) Airport transfers can be quoted for and the interior trains are extremely reasonable and very comfortable.

RAMADAN: Ramadan in 2009 starts 21st August and finishes 19th September. Reduced interior travel facilities are available, i.e trains and ferries will be more limited.

Other Activities: Bird watching, culteral trips, sea picnics on traditional Arab dhows, horse & cart trips

kerkennah is a lovelly place to visit so relaxing and peaceful. the house is set in the heart of the village on the island, the locals are very friendly and welcoming. the house is of traditional style and modern, very spacious living areas, the bedrooms are of good sizes, the bathrooms are traditional features and plenty of room.
the roof top terrace has amazing views of the island and the sun sets. the out door terrace is a lovelly place to chill out in the evening with friends and families.
my son enjoyed playing football with the locals on the beach as their football pitches are on the beach and an evening bbq
the sea is very shallow and warm its like having a bath. the beaches are a good place to play family games of bat and ball.
the food and drink is vey good and cheap, plenty of traditional to try.
you could hop on a ferry back to the main land and go shopping in the madinas and find a bargain. i thoroughly enjoyed shopping in the madinas and haggling a deal i came back with rugs for my home and plenty of gifts for thr family

Ouled Yaneg family house

Review Submitted: January 23, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
A lovely spacious, bright house with ethnic furnishings and touches, has a gated and enclosed garden with fig tree, pommegranite bushes and carob tree and is set at the east edge of the village. It has a decent size kitchen tiled with reclaimed patterned tiles and hand made wooden cupboards, hob, microwave, washing machine and lovely big fridge. There is Tunisian themed room which is a delight and an open plan living room with patio doors onto the garden terrance.
The downstairs bedroom has access to the loo/shower room with delightful mosaic tiling and a round shower.
Four good sized bedrooms on the first floor with comfortable beds and mossie nets for a bug free sleep. Lovely seperate tiled bathroom with very deep bath, loo and an individual terracotta basin.
Private sun bathing on the roof terrance with small room for storing sun furniture and a really useful fridge so you don't have to keep going downstairs for drinks.
Ample terracing around the house to find the sun or the shade as required, also a great place for eating.
Good local eateries to the north of island with locally caught fish on the menu and the traditional cuisine is an absolute must.
White sandy beaches on the north of the island with warm shallow sea, walking distance if you are feeling fit or grab a local taxi. The island is fairly flat so walking is not difficult and you get to see all the flora and fauna en route.
Suggest tours around the island by taxi to see the local architecture; colourful fishing boats and piles of octopus pots; the women in their colouful costumes tending their sheep and goats and gathering fodder. There is an amazing daily homecoming of the sheep at dusk to the north of the village - not to be missed.
No pool at the house but the hotel on the north of the island will allow swimmers in their pool by arrangement and for a small fee. You can eat there too.
Trips to Sfax on the mainland are inexpensive, the ferry runs throughout the day costs about 50p per head each way and takes about 75 mins. You can walk to the city center from the ferry port where there is an abundance of superb architecture and the medina, with its hidden alleyways, is a geat place to spend the day looking for bargains in ethnic pottery (which are heavy in your return luggage), clothes and leather goods and taking Tunisian tea. There is a whole street of shoe shops!
Would suit those who like to experience the slower pace of life for their holiday.

Kerkennah is quite a find for those who prefer experiencing the simple village life, meeting the locals and relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives.
Dar Chlouk is a beautiful house which combines traditional features with modern comforts. The village of Ouled Yaneg is small with 2 small grocery shops, a small gift shop and a couple of cafes. We immediately felt at home here - it is so peaceful and the locals always offer you a friendly greeting.
The beach at the only hotel is safe for children and you can use the facilities at the hotel - they do charge non residents to use the pool. This is a couple of miles from Ouled Yaneg but local taxis are cheap.
A short bus ride will take you to the island's capital Remla - a small town by our standards - which has a weekly market where you can buy fresh in-season produce.Sfax on the mainland is well worth a day trip.
The journey to Kerkennah is long, especially if you fly in to Tunis, but travelling down is all part of the experience - the trains are cheap and comfortable and staying a night in the capital to break up the journey is worthwhile.
The owners and their family go out of their way to accommodate your needs and provide information and advice about getting the most out of your stay. Highlights for us had to include seeing the sheep come in across the fields at dusk and a camel ride along the beach!

Holiday At Dar Mahmoud Chlouk

TunisiaFan#1 Horsham, West Sussex, UK
Review Submitted: January 15, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
My husband and I stayed at this property in July 2007 and enjoyed it so much that we went back to it in June 2008.

The house is wonderfully spacious and even staying in it with family and friends, there is so much room that you never realise that there can be 10 people in the house all at the same time.

The house is lovely and cool but we found going back to stay in it in June was far more refreshing than July because the outside temperatures were more intense at night and sleeping with a fan rather air-conditioning was very effective but could be slightly noisy if you had a front-facing bedroom and faced onto the road, which had slightly more traffic on the island in the peak month of July, when it was far quieter in June.

The air-conditioning in the lounge and on the landing is very effective and there are fantastic sunsets to be had froom the rooftop terrace.

We used to go up to the roof terrace and celebrate the sunset with a 'Pimms' every evening. Very romantic and tranquil!!!

The kitchen in the house is well-stocked and there is a little grocer's corner shop just a few minutes walk around the corner which appears to stock everything you will need to make delicious meals during your stay. There is also a very nice Pizza restaurant about twenty minutes walk from the house and they offer a fine array of pizzas and pasta meals.

My husband and I would definitely recommend this house for a delighful family holiday and you will be able to experience the real flavour of Tunisia with the traditional decor and the beautiful tiled bathrooms and arabic room. The garden also has a selection of fig trees, olive trees and pomegranit trees which give a cool tropical feel to the house.

We will certainly be booking to go back at some point in the not too distant future.

Chilling out on Kerkennah

the travellers from the north Edinburgh, Scotland
Review Submitted: January 13, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
A beautiful house. We were in the downstairs en-suite room and found it very clean, quiet and private. The open plan living and dining area was great for family living. The terraces at the front and back of the house allowed us to choose sun or shade (at the same time if we wanted!). Really appreciated the personal well, and the water was lovely. Would recommend going to the local shops, the market in Remla, the Roman fort, the local history museum, and to see the sheep come in at dusk. You can walk across the island fairly easily but a car is needed to see the north or go to Remla or the fort. Didn't try the local buses but they looked pretty good. Also spend some time in the Sfax medina if you can; it was very interesting and laid back. Good local knowledge from the owners.
