Surrounded by lovely countryside, with views to distant mountains, the 18th century farmhouse with its large private pool provides seclusion without isolation. Newly restored, it is perfect for a luxurious self-catering holiday with family or friends. With a stylish mix of modern and antique furnishings, clean white walls, dramatic lighting, traditional beams and handmade 'cotto' floors it has 4 big en-suite bedrooms - one with its own balcony. It is convenient for the cities and sights of Umbria, Tuscany and beyond and is just 15 minutes from Orvieto and Lake Bolsena. Inside a roof-to-floor hall opens into a lounge with and satellite TV. There is a games room and huge kitchen with a dining and seating area in front of an open fire. There is also a utility room and shower room/wc on the ground floor. Centrepiece of the garden is the 12mx8m pool with sun loungers and large umbrellas. Guests can dine on the terrace in the dappled shade of trees, beside an original pizza oven.

Laguscello is 15 minutes to the medieval city of Orvieto and 10 minutes to lovely Lake Bolsena with its fish restaurants, beaches and water sports and to the amazing eroded city of Civita Bagnoregio. It is 5 minutes from shops, bars and restaurants. Rome, Siena and Florence are within easy reach for a day out and there are fast, regular trains from Orvieto - the centre of Rome is an hour by rail. Close to the thermal springs at Saturnia and 90 minutes to beaches on the west coast. All the must-sees of Tuscany and Umbria are within easy reach, including Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Todi, Arezzo....Viterbo is a 30 minute drive and the gardens of Villa Lante and Bomarzo are also close. There are wine and jazz festivals in the area, plenty of walks - including from right outside Laguscello's front door. Animals, birds, wild flowers in spring and fungi in autumn to look out for too. Etrusan tombs are in the woodland, just a few minutes walk from the house.

  • Use of the pool is included from 23 May - 19 September. Use of the pool outside these dates can be arranged for a small additional charge. Once weekly cleaning (on changeover day- Saturday) is included - additonal maid service can also be arranged for an extra charge. Linen and towels are included, but please supply your own pool towels. A security deposit of £250 is required. Low, winter and Christmas rental prices do not include heating, which is charged at the rate of 1EURO per litre, on consumption.

  • Each bathroom has a new white sink, toilet, bidet and spacious walk-in shower. The master bathroom also has a bath. Luxurious towels are provided. Each btahroom has a large mirror over the sink and space to store toiletries. All have windows with shutters except the ground floor shower room/toilet.

  • Each spacious bedroom has exposed beamson high celings, cotto floors and a king size bed (double bed in bedroom 4). Each has a wardrobe with ample hanging space, with hangers provided, a large chest of drawers and small seating area with table. Bedrooms 1 and 2 overlook the rear garden, pool, fields and woodland to mountains in the distance. If you open the shutters in the morning, the sunshine floods in! Bedroom 1 has double doors leading onto a private balcony with a table and chairs and it also has a large traditonal open fireplace which may be lit for romantic winter evenings. The ensuite bathroom in this room aslo has a bath with shower attachment as well as a spacious separate shower. The other three rooms each have ensuite shower rooms - all with bidets. Bedrooms 3 and 4 overlook beautiful open countryside. One has a double sofa bed, the other an additonal single bed. A cot is provided. Each bedroom has a fan and a hairdryer is provided.

Notes: Laguscello is securely fenced with double gates and intercom system. There is an original pizza/bread oven outside, which may be used, as well as a barbecue. Indoor and outdoor dining tables are huge and hand-made by a local carpenter, both easily seat 12. The kitchen is the heart of the house and has an island unit with stools for informal eating, as well as a dining area and a lounge area with two leather sofas in front of an open fireplace. The separate main lounge has three sofas, writing desk and TV with a selection of DVDs and books for guests to use. A separate utility room contains a second, American-style, fridge, a second sink and washing machine/tumble dryer as well as extra store cupboards. A selection of board games/pool games/garden games and toys are provided. The separate games room has table tennis and table football as well as a toy box for young guests.

We wanted somewhere we could chill out with good friends we haven't seen in a while. The house was just perfect for this. It is lovely, with all you could need and in a beautiful location - not overlooked at all, surrounded by countryside and quiet without being off the beaten track. It was nice to just be able to amble for occasional walks through the fields and woodland, but equally, just a few minutes to bars, shops and restaurants. We all wanted to move in permanently and it was a real wrench to leave. Very spacious with huge rooms and really well equipped. Hairdryers provided for us to use was a bonus, fans to keep us cool at night, flyscreens to keep the bugs outdoors and having two fridges - one a large American-style one - meant we could shop in bulk with plenty of room to chill enough white wine for eight of us to last the week! We did some excursions into surrounding parts, most notably Lake Bolsena, which is just on the doorstep and the hot springs at Saturnia and we ventured by train from Orvieto to Florence. We loved it and going by train was easy yet an adventure in its own right. We swan in the huge pool,held table football and table tennis tournaments and we even used the original outdoor bread oven- not for baking bread, but for slow roasting meat, which was utterly delicious and eaten one evening on the big table on the terrace as the sun went down. Unforgettable!
Owner's Response: This review pretty much sums up Laguscello - almost makes us want to go ourselves! But then we know how lovely it is. The hot springs at Saturnia are definitely a must - some previous guests went in October 08 in hot sun - there is an area you can go to which is free (directions in the Rough Guide in Laguscello's 'library') - came back smelling of sulphur apparently! Florence is wonderful too - and there are other places nearby in Tuscany we'd recommend for days out. The last guests had a wonderful day on a beach in Tuscany (west coast - gorgeous sunsets) - they emailed to tell us all about it. How nice is that!

Beautiful house, lovingly restored and luxuriously fitted out.
Fantastic location, ideal for exploring, Orvieto, Lake Bolsena and Rome by train are musts.
The family loved the swimming pool and all the games provided and unanimlously agreed we must return soon

The title says it all. The property is newly restored, and to a very high standard. The construction and fit-out has lots of local, character-filled features (like HUGE exposed roof beams) combined with some very well constructed and installed modern technology (Smeg kitchen appliances, double glazed windows with integral shutters and fly screens). Although it wasn't blazing hot during our visit, I guess the very thick stone walls (3 feet in places) will keep things cool in summer. The place is very well equipped, and we didn't once wish for some kitchen gadget from home.

Bedrooms (4, all en-suite) are simply vast, with decent, new furniture, and the bathrooms are all fitted to a very high standard.

We only ate out a few times (too easy to just drop anchor in this place) in Orvieto and Todi where there are big choices and good food, and we took the train to Rome in order to tick off the Colosseum and Vatican. The train is very easy from Orvieto, and if you pay an additional 12%, you get to go first class. Florence is apparently also easy to reach this way. We made the mistake of driving to Siena on a holiday weekend. Do not try this yourself.
We also walked about a bit each day. There are beautiful woodland tracks all over the place, and the few locals we did meet ( including a black labrador called Basil) were all very friendly.

The location is everything it says in the description; far enough away from roads and other houses to give genuine peace and quiet, but close enough to make shopping a short drive, and Orvieto is only about 15 minutes away. There are great views in many directions.

I would not recommend this property to anyone wanting urban nightlife on their doorstep, nor to those who can't sleep unless lulled by thundering traffic. Otherwise, I don't see how you can possibly go wrong.

Idyllic location in luxurious peace and quiet

This farmhouse has been restored to an extraordinarily high standard. What's the best feature ? Well, the bedrooms are spacious each with its own well provided bathroom (don't get up in the night without switching on the light or paying out a ball of string - you'll never find the bed again); the enormous kitchen dining area has both a breakfast bar and a long table hewn from ancient trees which will seat everyone as well as a fireplace and two sofas to take time out during heavy meals; the lounge area with its tv and dvd player (completely unused by us - there was too much else to do) has more leather sofas than you can use at one sitting; there's a games room and a huge entry hall. Then there's outside - grass, trees, an enormous pool with loungers and umbrellas, and an al fresco dining area with a barbecue, a fence round the entire garden to keep in wandering youngsters, and keep out stray goats, and just up the hill the some Etruscan tombs. No other buildings are visible from Laguscello. We failed to find a nightclub anywhere near it. The turn off the main road is a bit tricky to find, and occasionally you get an odd group of English people walking past on their guided plod from Lake Bolseno to heaven knows where. If you must go out in the evening to a restaurant (recommended), or in the day to replenish the wine rack, you'll need a car. Things to do in the area - read a guide book.
Wonderful for families - if you have a row or the kids are getting you down, there's space to reflect and come to terms with the inevitable. But please make sure your children don't wreck the place. We'll be coming back.
