Naxos has the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a modern tourist resort, but at the same time has kept its traditional colour and local culture. Chora is a modern town which offers a hospital, banks, a very good market place and lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. It has a lively nightlife - with some good, local night clubs - not only during the summer months, like most islands, but all the year round.
The island landscape is made up of high mountains, fertile valleys, plateaus, springs, rivers, caves and huge beaches, and is ideal for walkers, climbers, windsailers, divers and sun lovers. The famous beaches on the south western side of the island, made up of kilometres of white golden sand are among the best in Euope, while the inland area and the romantic mountain villages offer tranquility and a chance to get away from it all.
Naxos has an abundance of ancient and Venetian archaeological treasures. Nearby sites include the temple of Dionysos and the sanctuary of Demetra.
