Photos and Description of this County Clare holiday chateau / country house Perfect for self catering families who enjoy the outdoors.

Built in the late 15th century, the estate has had a mixed past. The estate thrived through the 16th and 17th centuries before falling into disrepair and disuse. Although families were living on the estate, the castle itself had no roof and it wasn’t until the 1960’s that the castle was renovated using the same stone and the same techniques used when it was originally built. Now the castle sleeps 10 in very comfortable accommodation whilst still giving an impression of what life was like 500 years ago. Plants and flowers from the mediterranian and arctic regions that would normally not grow together in the same lattitude do so in this important distinctive landscape of limestone hills and fertile pockets of grassland. 7 lakes can be seen from the top of Ballyportry, and there is lake fishing near by and deep sea angling from Liscannor, a harbour beside the 800 foot Cliffs of Moher. The Burren is an important geological and botanical nature reserve as well as a bird sanctuary and archaeological paradise.
