Canillas de Aceituno lies 50 kms east of Malaga and 15 kms from the beaches at Torre del Mar/Caleta de Velez and has a population of 2,800.
The village is situated on the scenic Mudejar Route, at 645 metres in the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda mountain range. Walkers and climbers will love La Maroma, the highest mountain in Axarquia at 2080m, which rises up from Canillas making the village an ideal base for walking and exploring.
There are many shops in the village, including two banks, post office, art gallery, various mini supermarkets, butcher, pharmacy and a DIY shop. For eating in the village, there is a choice of 3 restaurants; the Bodega, La Sociedad and Brensons, run by an English couple, serving Mediterranean dishes. There is also a good choice of bars for tapas and drinks.
In addition to the beaches, Lake Vinuela is a short drive away, providing plenty of activities in and around the lake
