This area of coast reaches south from Porto nearly down to Lisbon. The recently constructed A8 motorway gives fast and direct access to all its wonders (taking just sixty minutes from Lisbon airport). There are numerous historical places and one outstanding attraction is the Medieval Town of Òbidos. Surrounded by castle walls, full of small cobbled streets - a glimpse of Portugal 100 years ago. The area boasts many spectacular beaches with miles of golden sand. The nearby beaches of Nazare and Peniche are well known for their quality surfing and Sao Martinho de Porto has a natural lagoon ideal for families with young children. Nazaré has been popular for many years with a wide sandy beach and vibrant squares surrounded by restaurants. Nazare also has a themed water park ideal for all the family. Another local sporting option is golf at Obidos or Praia del Rey (considered the best golf resort in Europe for 2007).
