Silver Coast:
As a holiday destination, the Silver Coast of Portugal offers a wide selection of activities - unspoilt beaches with high water quality, culture, championship level golf courses, a year round temperate climate and fabulous Portuguese cuisine, excellent wines and unbeatable nightlife.
Although hot and sunny in the summer (over 3,000 hours of sun every year) a light breeze from the Atlantic keeps the temperature to a comfortable level . In the winter Lisbon is regularly the hottest capital city in Europe. This means that when ever you decide to take your holiday you a great opportunity to spend that time outside in the fresh air.
Nazaré:
Possibly the most famous fishing town in Portugal, Nazaré is unique in many ways. It does not contain the architectural treasures or grandiose monuments prevalent in other Portuguese towns, but it has an atmosphere of times gone by, contentment and traditions which continue to thrive, which make it a special place to visit
The wooden fishing boats still used today are colourful and narrow with curved prows and decoration evocative of the first fishermen of the area; the Phoenicians, who settled here in pre-Christian times. On some prows you’ll even still see a watchful eye painted – in theory to detect the two most important things to a fisherman; shoals and storms – and many dangle lamps for fishing after sunset.
Nazaré is split into three main districts – Praia (beach), Pederneira and Sitio.
Nazaré Beach:
Along the seafront of Nazaré, people still dry their catch of fish in the sun and mend their boats alongside sunbathing holidaymakers and playful children enjoying the many attributes of the beach. A throng of craft shops and cafes stretches the length of the Avenida Marginal, as well as restaurants serving a great variety of the local speciality, which is of course fish. Caldeirada à Nazarena is a rich fish-based stew typical of the area, and fresh ingredients feature strongly on menus often offering the ‘catch of the day.
There is a wide range of traditional and modern restaurants, cafés and bars all along the seafront with plenty more to discover as you wander up the hills through the narrow side streets.
