How to get here: Fly from Stanstead Ryan Air direct to Brindisi. Alternatively London/Milan (Malpensa) (all carriers) then Easy Jet flight Malpensa/Brindisi or Alitalia London/ Milan(or Rome)/Brindisi. We also have flown Bournemouth/Milan(Bergamo) then taken train to Milan to catch overnight sleeper to Lecce then bus direct to Ugento centre - it was great fun. Good to be woken by the steward, with coffee and croissants, half hour or so before arrival at Milan. If this kind of journeys interest, we can provide more details.

Casa Ugento is richly furnished in the style of an old castle. It was very clean, well-maintained and very well equipped. The owners recommended an excellent restaurant 'Le Voilier' and when we mentioned their names, the owner treated us with special attention. This property is very well located in the centre of the town and the town is ideal for exploring the rest of the Salentino peninsular. It is close to sandy beaches and the spectacular cliff scenery of the eastern coast between Santa Maria di Leuca and Otranto. A hire car is necessary. It is a property that really enables the occupants to experience the daily life of a southern italian.

Thanks so much for your kind words. We agree, the furniture really does justice to this volt'a stella property, with its spacious high ceilings. It merits the decor we have chosen to reflect both its antiquity, its luxury and yet its modernity. We also agree that the nearby beaches are spectacular and the location of Ugento is really convenient for many kinds of activity.

We do like to share our love of the area with our clients. This way all can benefit from the wonderful hospitality and friendliness that we ourselves have experienced everywhere in this part of Salento for the five years that we have lived here. We are always made to feel special - like 'one of the family' - wherever we go, and this welcome is always extended to our guests.

During the past five or so years, Ugento has become increaslinly popular and well known as one of 'the' places to be for the eve of 'ferragosto' as the night of the 'Pizzica', a traditional regional festival where the locals come from all over Salento dance the night away to 5 live bands playing folk music. Although Villa Ugento is in the heart of the historic centre, minutes away from the festivities, one cannot hear a sound from the festival, so peaceful is the location. The saints festival at the end of September is also not to be missed. In fact, throughout the summer evenings there are increasingly popular 'sagre' (local festivals), offering regional food accompanied by traditional songs and dancing in the town squares of Ugento and other nearby towns.

In addition to Santa Maria di Leuca (and the fantastic boat trips to visit the grottos) and Ottranto, that you visited, the nearby towns of Gallipoli and Lecce (the Florence of the south) are well worth a visit. As are the many coastal resorts on the Ionian sea.

Since you were here, the Archeological Museum, which had taken the past 6 years to restore, opened its doors to a huge crowd and a wonderful celebration at its opening. It holds the second largest collection of Messapican artefacts and reports details of daily life in the surrounding area in the first century BC. The famous bronze statue of Zeus is displayed.

Beautiful town, nice house, but unfortunately noisy neighours.

Owner's Response: Villa Ugento is only a stone's throw from the main town squares and is an extremely quiet residential street. Ugento is indeed a typical beautiful Italian town where residents still take their afternoon siesta between 13.00 and 16.00, when the sun is hot and, after their evening meal, take their chairs outside their houses to sit and chat with neighbours and enjoy the balmy evenings al fresco.

Raaf 1 was fortunate enough to arrive on the most famous evening in Ugento, that attracts 80,000 - 100,00 visitors from neighbouring towns and villages. 'La Notte della Pizzica' (August 14) is the night of the tarantella dancing and the tarentella music. Fifteen Bands play this traditional music at 5 stages built at different locations around the town on the eve of the major Italian holiday of the year, Ferrragosto (August 15). The bands play consecutively at each of the 5 locations. The crowd are impeccably behaved by English standards, dancing, eating, drinking and generally having fun, throughout the town, where ever there is music. By the following morning of ferragosto, the streets have been cleaned and you wouldn't know that the festival had taken place. Apart from this one night, and the 3 day festival for their patron saints (September 26, 27 and 28) Ugento is probably one of the quietest towns in Salento.
