Wonderful village house in a peaceful village

If you are looking for a very comfortable gite in an atmospheric village that is central for many toursit attractions then look no further. The property is approx 45 mins from the coast and 15mins from canal du midi where there are lots of excellent restaurants. The English owner is extremely welcoming and helpful. We hope to return sometime soon.

Lovely old village house, clean and comfortable

Pip and Phil Leyburn, North Yorkshire, UK
Review Submitted: September 1, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Lovely house in delightful old village. Newly renovated, simple decor and well chosen furnishings, clean and welcoming. Help and advice available from the owner Chris who lives next door, welcoming touches on arrival and nothing was too much trouble eg laundry.
Very hot during our stay, but the house is on a narrow street within the medieval walls and stayed reasonably cool, especially the ground floor room which was ideal as a bedroom for our teenage daughters.
We found Mailhac a great base for exploring the surrounding area by car; the coast and some great beaches are under an hour away. There is a pleasant lakeside beach at Olonzac but we preferred to drive into the stunning hills of th Haut Languedoc to the north and found an excellent lake beach with boat hire, a sailing school and windsurfing as well as good swimming at Lac de la Raviege near La Salvetat (approx 1hr 15 mins).
The old village of Minerve is less than half an hour away and Carcassone is an easy drive too. Closer to home, wine-tasting opportunities are all around, and the village swimming pool was excellent for us (open afternoons in July and August).
Slight drawback is there is nowhere to eat out in the village and no shop, nearest supermarket at Olonzac or St Marcel 15 - 20 mins drive. However there are places to eat in Olonzac and surrounding vilages and we mainly cooked for ourselves, enjoying dining on the terrace at the top of the house on the warm summer evenings.
This property is good value for money, and is highly recommended for visitors with a car who like to explore.

Lovely relaxing holiday retreat!

Review Submitted: July 13, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
I stayed here in June 09 and despite it apparently being new to the rental market, it felt very warm and welcoming. Chris was extremely pleasant and made our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
The village is very quiet and peaceful, with plenty of history and great for evening walks through the village or vineyards, that seem to be everywhere!
There is a local bar that we went to on occasions where the locals drink and it's a good way to experience the local way of life. There is also a local square where we stumbled across numerous games of boules, adding to the very French feel of this place.
All of the local residents make you feel very welcome and as they sit on the village benches watching the world go by.

We did find that having a car helped enormously as without one, you might struggle. The village was ideally located to get the coast at Narbonne which is a gorgeous City with lots of history and also a very nice beach and the lakes at both Olonzac and Carcosonne, 15 minutes and 40 minutes away respectively were amazing. We even went as far afield as Montepellier and Perpignan which can be done as a day trip quite easily, both only an hour away. We found a lot of useful info on trips etc from the Mayor's office just round the corner from the house.

Overall, a very pleasant stay in a lovely property well worth the price and one to really get you relaxed and take your mind of everything back home.
