Nice property & location but needed a good clean

We rented this property in July 09 and whilst the property itself was basically good and the village was lovely, although no shops, there are a few comments we have to make.
There is only one small toilet in this property with no adjoining hand basin; you have to walk through the property to the kitchen or into the ensuite bedroom to wash your hands. The door to the toilet also does not fit properly therefore it’s easy to hear and smell the occupant’s activities in the living areas.
Unfortunately the house was generally dirty, there were hairs, not one but several, from the previous guests on the ensuite bathroom floor, numerous dead moths and flies etc on the floor throughout the property, many surfaces were generally dusty and lots of cobwebs and spiders everywhere. The patio door runner in the kitchen was absolutely disgusting.
The pictures advertising this property show a very well kept garden, unfortunately it was nothing like that front or rear, the grass had not been cut for at least a couple of weeks, the hedges were generally overgrown and there were lots of thistles in the patio pathway from the kitchen to the lawn.
We have tried to liaise with the owners only to receive a final sarcastic comment stating this is a 200 year old cottage not a four star hotel. Regardless of what the property is there is no excuse for this poor standard of cleanliness.
Owner's Response: We are very sorry that these guests found the cottage to be below their expectations, but have liased with them over this matter. We have always tried to ensure that the property is kept clean and tidy and it is always cleaned and the garden done (weather permitting) prior to guests arriving. On a very recent visit, the house and garden were both clean and tidy, the hedges cut and certainly no thistles in the patio. Unfortunately with older properties, facilities are not always in the most convenient of positions (hand basin), but the toilet is tucked away off a small corridor and off the main hall area. It is away from all seating, dining and cooking areas. The toilet door does close and lock but can be a little stiff at times. This is being rectified.
